Pokemon GO‘s developer Niantic plans to release a game exclusive to 5G technology currently known as Codename: Urban Legends. Utilizing 5G will increase capabilities related to player capacity and gameplay responsiveness.
Niantic has established itself in the augmented reality sector of gaming. Of course, its most successful game Pokemon GO was a massive hit for both old and new fans of the franchise, combining gaming with going outside and exploring for a unique experience. Even in the midst of the pandemic, Pokemon GO has been able to thrive. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was less popular but still widely successful, leading up to the more recent announcement of an unnamed Pikmin AR mobile game from Niantic.
But the AR developer is keeping the ball rolling with yet another new announcement. Niantic is planning to release another AR game, this time exclusive to 5G cellular devices, called Codename: Urban Legends. Utilizing 5G networks will allow for faster, improved experiences, says Niantic in a blog post, that allows up to 10 times the number of simultaneous players that 4G cellular networks can support.
The Pokemon GO developer released a video showing off Codename: Urban Legends‘ experience, which includes spellcasting and mythical creatures including Doty, Niantic’s mascot. While that, along with the trailer above, are the only details about the new game, Niantic plans to use Codename to demonstrate 5G’s capabilities when it comes to AR experiences, impacting low-latency, high bandwidth (meaning more player interaction), and even longer battery life.
Judging by the trailer, Niantic’s new game looks to be a multiplayer fantasy game. While there’s currently no word on a release date for Codename: Urban Legends, Niantic’s Pikmin game is already out for Early Access in Singapore, so perhaps Codename isn’t too far off.
Codename: Urban Legends is currently in development.
