Bungie New IP Looking to Launch in 2025 | Game Rant

Since 2019, when Bungie CEO Pete Parsons said that the company aimed to be a multi-franchise studio, fans of Halo and Destiny have been anxious to hear about what’s coming next. 2020 saw several different official mentions of a new IP, leaks about new games, rumors like the game title Matter, and much more. That new Bungie IP excitement has continued in early 2021, but one official detail hasn’t changed. 2025 is still Bungie’s target for bringing a new IP to market.

In an interview with Japanese outlet 4Gamer, Bungie design director Jacob Benton reiterated the company’s official line regarding new IP.

Benton says that Bungie is “looking firmly at 2025,” to have a new IP on the market. Benton also reconfirms that Bungie is actively working on this “new secret world” alongside the active development of the Destiny franchise. With the new IP being years away, Benton says that there are no further details to share regarding the project at this time.

This isn’t entirely new information, of course. When Parsons made his initial confirmation that Bungie was looking to become a multi-franchise studio, it came with a plan to release a new game or games by 2025. Parsons’ 2025 outlook hasn’t changed since 2019, even with Bungie acknowledging its work on non-Destiny projects in other ways. As such, Benton is simply conveying the company line verbatim. Nothing has changed as to Bungie’s public-facing plans.

2025 likely isn’t the year that Bungie fans want to hear for a new franchise to begin. After all, that’s almost four years away. It’s a very long wait, especially when video game fans have such a consistent flow of great new games being released month to month. But that doesn’t mean that fans should set their expectations aside entirely. 2025 is when Bungie wants to have a new IP out. That could mean that it’s actually targeting an earlier date.

It’s too early to make any assumptions regarding what Bungie is really doing with its new IP, of course. If pre-production started in 2019 or 2020, a six-year development cycle leading to a 2025 launch isn’t outrageous. It would be a very big project, of course, but is within standard dev practices. On the other hand, Bungie seems pretty excited about what it’s working on, so that could mean development is further along than the public knows.

For the time being, Bungie’s public-facing focus remains Destiny 2. Eventually, another project will be announced and will share the spotlight. Fans should be patient, as Bungie will share more information when it’s able, but more so because it could be a very long wait.
