One of the most distinguishing characteristics of Destiny 2: Beyond Light are the weapons. Throughout playing, fans collect all kinds of different tools and gear to customize their personal Guardian. Some are Exotic versions, typically equipment with unique effects locked behind quests or challenges. To complete the Pain and Gain Exotic quest in Destiny 2, keep reading this guide for details.
By completing this special challenge, players can earn an Exotic SMG known as Riskrunner. This weapon may be familiar for Destiny veterans, but completing the quest can also earn the gun’s catalyst. Keep in mind, this version will be a powerful drop so Guardians might want to wait until reaching the current soft cap for light level before pursuing it. In addition, to even start this quest requires purchasing the Shadowkeep expansion for Destiny 2, so make sure to pick that up before continuing this guide.
So, after grabbing the expansion, head to the Moon to begin the main questline. Grabbing the Pain and Gain quest requires first beating through the initial story mission of Shadowkeep. Once that is done, bring up the destination map and return to the Tower. Speak to the gunsmith Banshee-44 and he will automatically hand over the Exotic quest for Guardians to start.
Players will immediately recognize the tasks which involve a Lost Sector, Heroic Event, and Nightfall. By this point, Guardians know some spots to complete a Lost Sector, but for Pain and Gain the objective requires completing it on the EDZ. Just drop in at the main landing zone and complete one of the short Lost Sectors hidden around the area. By this point, a public event could be starting which helps with the next part. The Exotic quest demands activating a Heroic Public Event, so make sure to beat that version to continue the quest.
Now the last part will likely be one of the most difficult parts of this entire questline. Regular Nightfalls or the returning Grandmaster Nightfalls are random, and both need a fireteam of three to complete. Matchmaking is not a feature for these strikes, so either grab some clan members or group up online. While these can be tough battles, a coordinated team of veterans should have no problem finishing the Nightfall.
After finishing that up, a new mission will unlock on the EDZ. Do not rush to complete this though, because players need to kill three Dusk Captains as a special objective. They are not marked and only spawn after killing a bunch of regular enemies. Defeating the captains places a marker for a secret area; just follow this and cross the jumping puzzle to reach Riskrunner.
Finally, follow the path to encounter a powerful boss. Take it down using Riskrunner or any other weapons to earn the Year 2 Exotic catalyst. With all of that done, players will have successfully completed Pain and Gain.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
