Space Jam: A New Legacy is still a few months away from its premiere, yet the film has already become quite notorious for the amount of controversy surrounding some of its creative decisions. Putting all those matters aside, Space Jam 2 is just a normal movie like all others and the marketing team has just released the movie’s official posters featuring the Looney Tunes’ roster.
Of course, Pepe Le Pew is nowhere to be seen after he was cut from the Looney Tunes squad due to his inappropriate past behavior. However, the rest of Michael Jordan’s former teammates are here to help LeBron James surpass His Airness’ legacy, at least when it comes to LeBron’s acting skills, this July.
The posters were shared by Space Jam 2’s official Twitter account, and they feature the same orange and purple colored palette seen in most of the movie’s promotional material, while also showing what most of the Tunes look like dressed up in their brand new uniforms. The towering 6’8” LeBron can be seen next to Bugs Bunny’s ears in the main poster, as the tallest Looney Tune still stands at a measly 3’5” or 4” even when including the ears, though those really don’t come too handy for basketball purposes.
Meanwhile, Lola Bunny, the third-highest scorer against the Monstars and former WNBA dress code offender, is sporting her redesigned look. The non-sexualized Lola retains all of her athleticism sans the crop top to look more the part, like fellow cast member and female basketball legend Diana Taurasi. Lola Bunny’s redesign and Pepe’s dismissal were the two main points of discussion when bringing Space Jam in tune with modern culture.
Potential sixth man and outrage spark Speedy Gonzalez retained his signature sombrero in spite of some people calling for his removal alongside poor old Pepe, but as voice actor Gabriel Iglesias put it: cancel culture can’t catch “the fastest mouse in all of Mexico.” Daffy Duck and the Tasmanian Devil probably fill out the rest of the starting lineup, as they were among the few Tunes to actually get on the first Space Jam’s absurd scoresheet.
While the Looney Tunes squad are certainly no Los Angeles Lakers, the starting team and benchwarmers like Tweety, the Road Runner, Porky Pig, and Marvin the Martian have a ton more experience than they had in the original 1996 Space Jam film. Who knows, maybe if they play well the Brooklyn Nets might negotiate a trade for one of the Tunes.
Space Jam: A New Legacy will be released in theaters and HBO Max on July 16, 2021
