‘Nobody’ Director Ilya Naishuller Says John Wick Crossover Is Possible

The director of the revenge thriller, Nobody, recently discussed if a crossover with the John Wick franchise could occur in the near future. Nobody and John Wick have garnered numerous comparisons to one another, as both were written by Derek Kolstad and revolve around former assassins.

Ilya Naishuller’s Nobody centers on a suburban father who becomes the target of a drug lord after a home invasion. Naishuller, who previously directed 2015’s Hardcore Henry, cast Bob Odenkirk (Breaking BadBetter Call Saul) as Hutch “Nobody” Mansell, an office worker who craves violence and will do anything to win his children’s approval. Connie Nielsen (Gladiator), RZA, and Christopher Lloyd (Back To The Future) round out the cast. The film earned rave reviews from critics and debuted atop the domestic box office charts this past weekend.

Odenkirk ironically trained for two years at the same gym Keanu Reeves used before John Wick. The two stars have been compared to one another as of late, starting when the first Nobody trailer debuted. They both played talented ex-hit-men who crave revenge. The Better Call Saul star previously asserted that he doesn’t think John Wick and Hutch would ever cross paths because they live in different worlds. Wick is in the city surrounded by bad guys, while Hutch lives in the middle of nowhere.

In an interview with IndieWire, Naishuller was asked if he could envision a future John Wick and Nobody crossover. The Russian filmmaker said a crossover is unrealistic because different studios made the two franchises. Lionsgate makes the John Wick films and Universal Pictures released Nobody. But despite this, Naishuller wouldn’t rule out the two worlds colliding someday. “I love when the people ask, ‘Is it the same universe?,’” said Naishuller, while adding, “I mean, everything’s possible. Stranger things have definitely happened, but… yeah.”

Kolstad recently announced that he not writing the scripts for John Wick 4 and 5. The franchise creator wrote the previous three installments and is currently working as an executive producer on the hit Disney Plus series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Kolstad revealed that while his exit wasn’t his decision, he is excited to see what’s next for the acclaimed action franchise. Lionsgate has yet to announce who is penning the scripts for the upcoming sequels.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is scheduled to start shooting this summer in Germany and France. The previous three John Wick films have collectively grossed over $580 million worldwide. Due to the success of the franchise, a John Wick spin-off series titled The Continental was green-lit at Starz. Franchise director Chad Stahelski noted that the series would feature origin stories of various John Wick characters.

Nobody is now playing in theaters and John Wick: Chapter 4 is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 27, 2022.
