Last year, PlatinumGames unveiled the Platinum 4, a series of announcements related to the company, among them being a Kickstarter for The Wonderful 101 Remastered and news that it would enter self-publishing. The fourth, and seemingly final, announcement was a new entry in the Cresta series of arcade shooters. Platinum later admitted this was an April Fools joke but, bizarrely, it has pulled the same gag again this year.
Earlier today, PlatinumGames‘ official YouTube channels uploaded another trailer for the supposedly fake Sol Cresta game, which the company claims to be working on with Hamster Corporation, the company that owns the Cresta IP. It even contains legitimate looking gameplay footage. The trailer ends with confirmation of Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam releases, along with a vague release window of 2021 and that it is coming as part of the Neo-Classic Arcade Series Volume 1.
One could argue that Platinum is simply dedicating itself to the bit with such an authentic looking trailer, but it seemingly doing the exact same joke twice is a bit of an odd decision to make. As a result, there are some suspicions that the game is actually real. There may already be some evidence for this, as an official trademark for Sol Cresta was filed last month.
The comments underneath the English trailer show plenty of mixed reactions. Some believe it’s real, others don’t believe it, and everybody else is simply confused. At the time of writing, Platinum itself has yet to make any sort of comment on it.
Even if it does turn out not to be real, Platinum still has a few projects in the works for fans to anticipate, such as its superhero game Project GG. One of the Platinum 4 announcements and the studio’s first self-published title, it acts as the third entry in director Hideki Kamiya’s superhero trilogy, following Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101. Apparently, development on it has begun recently, which also means that it likely won’t release for a while, at the very least not until after 2021.
There’s also the secret fifth project which was announced following last year’s April Fools joke. There’s still zero information about it, though, outside of it being referred to as a Bonus Stage on the official website and a potential release date of 2021.
Lastly, there’s Bayonetta 3. It’s been over three years since it was announced as a Nintendo Switch exclusive with a brief teaser trailer, but Platinum and Nintendo have remained completely silent about it ever since, prompting concerns that it’s going through development troubles. While Kamiya has said he hopes to finally provide an update before the end of this year, he’s also suggested that fans forget about the game for a while.
