Pokemon GO has plenty of difficult challenges for players to face with the fights against Team GO Rocket’s leaders being often required for different kinds of research tasks. The latest example of this has come with the Tricky Pokemon 2021 timed research tasks.
These timed research tasks are available in Pokemon GO until the end of April 8th, 2021 in players’ local times. There is only one step to these tasks, but they are still definitely worth completing with players earning a Super Rocket Radar if they complete all three individual tasks.
One of the Tricky Pokemon 2021 tasks is to defeat one of Team GO Rocket‘s leaders. One of these leaders is Cliff, a user of very powerful Pokemon that can steamroll many players’ teams if they are unprepared. Thankfully the possibilities for his party are well documented, allowing players to learn what to expect.
Cliff has a specific list of Pokemon he may use against players in every battle. His first Pokemon is always guaranteed to be Aerodactyl, but his second and third Pokemon each have their own pools of possible Pokemon he can have. Cliff’s second Pokemon can be either Gallade, Slowking, or Cradily. His third and final Pokemon have the options of being either Tyranitar, Dusknoir, or Mamoswine.
The only way for players to know what exact team Cliff will have in a specific encounter would be if players lose to Cliff then rematch him within the same encounter. This will allow players to better plan around his team and win the second time around.
Aerodactyl is a dual Rock and Flying-type Pokemon. As previously stated, this Pokemon will always be the first Pokemon that Cliff will use in battle. Due to its typing, Aerodactyl is weak to Ice, Rock, Steel, Water, and Electric-type moves. It however also resists damage from Ground, Normal, Bug, Poison, Flying, and Fire-type moves.
There are quite a few Pokemon that can help take Aerodactyl down quickly without wasting too much time or health. Some of the best counters for Aerodactyl are:
Therian Thundurus – Thunder Shock and Thunderbolt
Mamoswine – Powder Snow and Avalanche
Greninja – Bubble and Surf
Kabutops – Waterfall and Stone Edge
Aggron – Iron Tail and Heavy Slam
The first of the Pokemon that can appear in Cliff’s second party slot is Gallade. This Pokemon is a dual Psychic and Fighting-type, making it weak to Fairy, Flying, and Ghost-type moves. It however also resists damage from Fighting and Rock-type moves.
Gallade’s weaknesses are commonly used by a lot of powerful Pokemon currently in Pokemon GO. The best ones for the fight against Cliff’s Gallade include:
Gengar/Mega Gengar – Lick and Shadow Ball
Chandelure – Hex and Shadow Ball
Moltres – Wing Attack and Sky Attack
Rayquaza – Air Slash and Hurricane
Mewtwo – Confusion and Shadow Ball
Another Pokemon that Cliff can have as his second party member is Slowking. This Pokemon is a dual Water and Psychic-type, making it weak to Ghost, Dark, Electric, Grass, and Bug-type moves. While its large list of weaknesses may make it look easy to deal with, Slowking also resists damage from Steel, Fighting, Water, Psychic, Ice, and Fire-type moves.
Like Cliff’s other Pokemon, there are plenty of options players have to counter Slowking. The best ones for the job are:
Therian Thundurus – Thunder Shock and Thunderbolt
Gengar/Mega Gengar – Lick and Shadow Ball
Roserade – Bullet Seed and Grass Knot
Darkrai – Snarl and Shadow Ball
Zekrom – Charge Beam and Wild Charge
The last Pokemon that Cliff can have in his second party slot is Cradily, a dual Rock and Grass-type Pokemon that is the evolved form of Lileep. Cradily is weak to Fighting, Ice, Bug, and Steel-type moves while only resisting damage from Electric and Normal-type moves.
This Pokemon will cause players the least amount of trouble compared to the likes of Gallade and Slowking, but there are still recommended Pokemon that can quickly take care of Cradily. These Pokemon are:
Mamoswine – Powder Snow and Avalanche
Therian Thundurus – Thunder Shock and Focus Blast
Aggron – Iron Tail and Heavy Slam
Walrein – Frost Breath and Blizzard
Roserade – Bullet Seed and Grass Knot
Cliff’s final Pokemon will always provide players with a tough fight with the first possible one being Tyranitar. This Pokemon is a pseudo-legendary Pokemon and a dual Rock and Dark-type. Tyranitar is weak to Fighting, Fairy, Ground, Bug, Steel, Water, and Grass-type moves. It however also resists damage from Dark, Normal, Poison, Ghost, Flying, Fire, and Psychic-type moves.
Tyranitar can cause players a lot of problems, but there are Pokemon that can fight back pretty well. The best ones to bring are:
Lucario – Counter and Aura Sphere
Conkeldurr – Counter and Dynamic Punch
Breloom – Counter and Dynamic Punch
Machamp – Counter and Dynamic Punch
Blaziken – Counter and Focus Blast
Another Pokemon that can serve as the final part of players’ battle with Cliff is Dusknoir. This Pokemon is a pure Ghost-type, making it weak to only Dark and Ghost-type moves. It however also resists damage from Bug, Poison, Fighting, and Normal-type moves.
It may be risky, but using hard-hitting Ghost-types can make sure Dusknoir goes down before players lose their entire party of Pokemon. Dark-type Pokemon are additionally very helpful in this fight. For both of these types, the best ones to bring along are:
Gengar/Mega Gengar – Lick and Shadow Ball
Chandelure – Hex and Shadow Ball
Darkrai – Snarl and Shadow Ball
Weavile – Snarl and Foul Play
Origin Giratina – Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball
The last Pokemon that could be sent out by Cliff is Mamoswine. It is a powerful dual Ice and Ground-type Pokemon that is capable of countering many different powerful Pokemon itself. Mamoswine however has far more weaknesses than resistances with it being weak to Fire, Fighting, Grass, Water, and Steel-type moves. The only move types that Mamoswine resists are Poison and Electric-type moves.
Mamoswine’s appearance may suggest that it’s more of a tank Pokemon, but it is capable of being a very hard hitter. Players will need to take it down fast with the best Pokemon for the job being:
Lucario – Counter and Aura Sphere
Conkeldurr – Counter and Dynamic Punch
Machamp – Counter and Dynamic Punch
Kyogre – Waterfall and Surf
Blastoise/Mega Blastoise – Water Gun and Hydro Cannon
Pokemon GO is available on Android and iOS.
