A new report outlining what to expect from Sony’s PS5 VR headset has been released with information on the display, foveated rendering, and the controllers.

Sony announced back in February it was working on a new VR headset for PS5, and that PS5 VR would feature a sharper resolution, wider field of view, enhanced tracking, and that it would connect to PS5 with a single cord which will simplify setup and improve ease-of-use.

Further information on the headset was not provided at the time, but a new report has surfaced with details regarding what to expect from the next VR offering from Sony.

According to PSVR Without Parole, Sony held a private conference yesterday where it briefed developers on the headset (thanks, Upload VR).

The report, which corroborates a UploadVR report from May, states the device features a resolution of 4000×2040 pixels (2000×2040 per eye) and eye-tracking support that renders fewer pixels in peripheral areas.

PSVR Without Parole also stated the unnamed device, codenamed NGVR, features an HDR OLED display with a 110-degree field of view. Because it renders fewer pixels in peripheral areas (foveated rendering), the PS5 headset could also make use of flexible scaling resolution which would increase the performance of games released for the device.

The headset’s controllers were also discussed in the report, and it is said they feature “capacitive touch sensors for the thumb, index, and middle finger.” The sensors can tell both when the controller is being touched and how far away a user’s fingers are from it. Sony previously confirmed the controller would incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on ergonomics.

Sony is also looking to release triple-A titles for the headset and wants PS5 titles to feature hybrid VR Support, allowing players to choose between downloading the traditional version of a game or the VR version first.

The company said back in February not to expect the headset to be released this year, but today’s report states the new VR offering will be revealed in early 2022.
