Review: Redmi Note 10 Pro Max is the budget phone to beat in 2021

11 3 月, 2021 Harish Jonnalagadda 0

With a 120Hz AMOLED panel and 108MP camera at the back, the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max has the upgrades you’re looking for.

The most important phone launch in India isn’t from Samsung, Vivo, Realme, OPPO, or even OnePlus. That particular honor belongs to the Redmi Note lineup. The series has defined the budget category over the last five years, with Xiaomi racking up 200 million sales in that time.

But what’s particularly interesting is just how many phones Xiaomi sold in the last 15 months. It took the brand over three years to hit the 100 million milestone, but just 15 months to sell another 100 million units — averaging sales of 7 million a month around the world. It’s no wonder, then, that the Redmi Note 9 was one of the best-selling phones globally in 2020 and the standard for the best cheap Android phones.

In 2021, Xiaomi is taking things to the next level with the Redmi Note 10 series. The phones now come with AMOLED screens as standard, and the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max has a 108…

Turbocharge your NAS enclosure with these great SSDs

8 3 月, 2021 Harish Jonnalagadda 0

The best solid-state drive (SSD) for home NAS lets you store and access data five times faster than a mechanical hard drive. If you use a lot of I/O-intensive workloads, you can also slot in an NVMe SSD inside the NAS for caching. The obvious choice is the Seagate IronWolf 110 NAS SSD as it’s designed for NAS enclosures, has an unmatched endurance rating, and decades-long reliability.

Unmatched reliability

Staff Pick

The IronWolf 110 is a new class of SSD that’s designed for NAS enclosures. It’s costlier than most 2.5-inch SSDs, but that’s because of the reliability on offer. With an endurance rating of 435TBW (terabytes written) for the 240GB version, you can write 100GB of data daily to the NAS and it won’t wear out for 12.5 years or more. With data transfers of up to 560MB/s and optimized for 24/7 use, the IronWolf 110 is the best SSD for your home NAS.

OnePlus Nord 2 is launching in Q2 2021 with MediaTek’s flagship chipset

4 3 月, 2021 Harish Jonnalagadda 0

OnePlus’ upcoming mid-range phone will be its first without a Qualcomm chipset.

What you need to know

The next phone in the Nord series is called the Nord 2, and it will launch be unveiled in Q2 2021.
The Nord 2 is getting a big hardware upgrade in the form of a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset.
The Dimensity 1200 chipset is built on a 6nm node and features Cortex A78 and A55 cores.

The OnePlus 9 is on the horizon, with the series set to make its debut sometime later this month. If the numerous leaks are anything to go by, the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro should offer much better cameras than their predecessors. But the numbered flagship series isn’t the only lineup OnePlus has to care about these days; the introduction of the Nord last year has allowed the Chinese manufacturer to make decent inroads into the mid-range segment.

Why don’t we see any more pop-up selfie cameras?

28 2 月, 2021 Harish Jonnalagadda 0

You can still find a few phones with pop-up selfie cameras, but don’t hold out for this trend to make a comeback.

Phone manufacturers have waged a war on bezels over the last four years, and the result is that even budget phones these days have ultra-thin bezels on all sides. Thin bezels mean you get a larger screen-to-body ratio, allowing brands to cram a larger screen without increasing the dimensions of the phone. For some context, the Galaxy S9+ had a 6.2-inch panel, and the Galaxy S21 offers the same screen size even though it is 6.4mm shorter.

Xiaomi was the one to kick off this particular trend back in 2016 with the Mi Mix, which offered a 91.3% screen-to-body ratio. Xiaomi achieved this by changing the location of the front camera module to the bottom bezels, leading to an all-screen design. Brands have iterated on this formula; the Galaxy S8 and S9 series featured thin bezels at the top that hid the camera module, the ZenFone 5 and OnePlus 6 went the iPhone route and added…

Review: Xiaomi Mi 11 beats the Galaxy S21 where it counts

24 2 月, 2021 Harish Jonnalagadda 0

Xiaomi has finally created a phone that beats the best that Samsung has to offer.

I’ve used all Xiaomi phones in the Mi numbered series starting with the Mi 3. The Mi 3 and Mi 4 offered outstanding value for money and set up Xiaomi as a viable alternative to established brands in countries like India. The Mi 5 continued that push with a gorgeous metal and glass design, the Mi 5s switched to an all-metal aesthetic, the Mi 6 showcased Xiaomi’s hardware and camera prowess, the Mi 8 saw the introduction of the notch, and the Mi 9 had a great camera but was a letdown in terms of software.

Xiaomi changed its strategy last year, focusing on the high-end segment with the Mi 10 Pro. The regular Mi 10 was aimed at value-focused buyers, with both phones offering outstanding cameras and a gorgeous design that made them hold their own against the Galaxy S20.

Ultimately, it was the software that let down the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro. Software issues have been a constant thorn in Xiaomi’s side over t…

OnePlus 8T review: Striking the perfect balance

15 2 月, 2021 Harish Jonnalagadda 0

With 65W fast charging and a 120Hz display, the OnePlus 8T has the upgrades you’re looking for.

OnePlus has to thread the needle every year with its mid-cycle T refresh. It needs to add enough new features that customers find a compelling enough reason to pick up the new phone, but not too many that it risks overshadowing its numbered flagship series.

OnePlus, therefore, has to strike the ideal balance when it comes to new features. With the OnePlus 8T, it has managed to do just that. The phone has internal hardware that’s similar to the OnePlus 8 series, but it picks up 65W fast charging and a new design for the rear camera housing that makes it stand out. There’s also a 120Hz display, and the screen itself is flat, unlike the OnePlus 8 series.

OnePlus is facing increased competition in this category with the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which includes most of the features from the regular S20 series at a much more affordable $699 price — making it one of the …
