How to measure blood oxygen saturation with a Samsung phone

Oxygen saturation, often shortened to SpO2, is a measure of the concentration of oxygen in your blood. On numerous Samsung phones, SpO2 can be measured using a series of sensors on the back of the phone in a method called pulse oximetry, which emits and absorbs a light wave through the blood vessels in your fingertip.

Samsung has moved this feature around quite a bit and even removed it entirely on many of its newer phones, but if your device still has the capability to read SpO2, it can be a useful health measurement.

I’ve been working from home for about five years now, and a large portion of that time was spent on the iMac that sat on my desk until just a few months ago, when I sold it in favor of a laptop-and-monitor setup. I stuck with mostly first-party peripherals with my iMac — save for the miserable Magic Mouse that I quickly swapped for a Logitech MX Master — which means I’m no stranger to Apple’s Magic Keyboard 2.

It’s a great keyboard, with similar key travel to older MacBook Pro models, a minimal design, and a small footprint.
