Netflix isn’t going to out-TikTok, TikTok

13 11 月, 2021 Jerry Hildenbrand 0

Netflix is bringing another “shorts” feature to mobile. This time, it’s geared toward kids. Why?

Netflix is a good place to stream movies or shows and has done a great job making its own content. I use the service like many do, and I have to say I’m pretty satisfied with it. It’s cheap, gives me a lot of entertainment, and runs on the best Android phones and almost everything with an internet connection just like Skyrim does.

But 2021 has been a weird year for the service where it’s hatched a couple of schemes to try and offer different kinds of content, like games or TikTok-style shorts. It’s not finished apparently because the company has confirmed to TechCrunch that it will be bringing Netflix Kids Clips, which are short videos for (you guessed it) kids. I can’t help but think this whole idea of chasing TikTok is pretty silly.

A look at TikTok and it’s pretty clear why it’s successful: Its mobile-first launched everywhere all at once and has a top-secret algorithm that decides …

Fairphone 4 review: Sustainable, repairable, and ethical

10 11 月, 2021 Jerry Hildenbrand 0

Sustainability, modularization, and modern design meet in a phone from a small Dutch company.

There are literally hundreds and hundreds of different phones you can buy today, and many of them offer something unique. This makes it really difficult to stand out in the crowd, and when a company is able to do something different that also turns out to be something great, it’s worthy of our attention.

If nothing else, that’s what the Fairphone 4 aspires to do. It’s a big step forward from the company’s previous offering while being just as sustainable and repairable. If you live in Europe (the Fairphone 4 isn’t available outside of Europe at this time), it’s a device that deserves to be on your radar. Not necessarily because of what it can do, but because of what it is.

The Fairphone 4 is the phone I would buy if it were available for North American networks. It’s also one of the best sustainable and repairable phones you can buy.

The Fairphone 4 is what smartphone sustainability really looks like

6 11 月, 2021 Jerry Hildenbrand 0

The Fairphone 4 is 100% e-waste neutral, includes a full, no-B.S., five-year warranty, and its goal is to provide six years of software support. It’s also the only phone that ships with a screwdriver.

The past few phone launches from almost every manufacturer spent a reasonable amount of time explaining how each company was working toward smartphone sustainability. We heard things like “X-% of our phones are made from recycled materials” and “you don’t need a charger because you already have one” to show that these companies are getting serious about the environment. But it still felt like more could be done. These are giant corporations with seemingly unlimited resources, after all.

Meanwhile, another small phone maker from the Netherlands seems to place sustainability at the same level as profits. Fairphone has been making products with meaningful commitments toward sustainability and eco-friendliness with little fanfare. Though the company isn’t selling phones in North America, …

How does the Google Titan M2 and Tensor security core work?

5 11 月, 2021 Jerry Hildenbrand 0

Best answer: Titan is Google’s branding for hardware-based security products, and with the Pixel 6 series, it’s now a two-part setup. The Titan M2 is a discrete RISC-V security chip fully designed and developed by Google. It communicates with the new Google Tensor security core, which is a custom-designed security subsystem. Together they are dedicated to the preservation of user privacy.

What is the Titan M2?

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro use a newly designed security chip named the Titan M2. They aren’t the first Pixel phones to ship with hardware-backed Titan security, but the chip was fully redesigned.

The Titan M2 is developed and designed completely in-house by Google. It’s a RISC-V processor combined with its own memory to bridge security functions between multiple CPU cores and threads. Its architecture alone has proven to be very resilient against attack.

The Titan M2 also supports Android Strongbox, which securely generates and stores keys used to safeguard user passwor…
