Puzzle your way through crazy town in UnHoly Neighborhood for Android

23 7 月, 2021 Rachel Mogan 0

A missing wife, mutated rats, and monstrous tentacles are just a few of poor Peter Grim’s problems.

I love a good point-and-click adventure game. Thimbleweed Park scratched that itch for me, though it was honestly a bit too difficult for my soft, smooth brain to handle. So I decided to give fellow point-and-clicker Unholy Neighborhood a try, and I’ve been loving it so far.

A newer title released in May of this year, Unholy Neighborhood (listed as Unholy Adventure in the Google Play Store) is a rare example of a free, good quality game that isn’t drowning in ads or monetized to heck and back. The game’s description claims it has ads, but I played on BlueStacks Android Emulator and only ever got one “ad” that I can think of, a small pop-up asking me if I wanted to download another one of the developer’s games. After this experience, I just might do that, Dali Games.

Unholy Neighborhood opens with a cutscene that reminded me of The Purge, with a healthy dose of Eldritch horrors m…

Baba is me? No, Baba Is You! And Baba is finally on Android

16 7 月, 2021 Rachel Mogan 0

What is reality? How does the world work? That’s up to your interpretation in Baba Is You.

Puzzle games represent one of the most diverse and interesting gaming genres today. Look at optical delights like Manifold Garden, ultra-minimalistic games like Two Dots, or elaborate, brain-breaking escape games like Samsara Room. Cast a stone in any direction in a room full of the best Android puzzle games, and you’ll likely hit upon something great. But the arrival of the critically acclaimed Baba Is You on the Play Store is especially great news for Android gamers.

Baba Is You’s premise, like most good puzzle games, is incredibly simple at first glance. In a pixelated 2D plane, you control a little creature (A rabbit? A cat? It could be anything if you squint hard enough) and must guide your little Baba to the goal. Now, what’s the goal exactly? That’s a great question, and it’s harder to answer than you might think — since the goal changes from one level to the next.

Unmaze for Android is a stunning adventure through a sinister labyrinth

9 7 月, 2021 Rachel Mogan 0

In a world of light and shadow, guide your loved ones through the maze before monstrosity overtakes them.

Your little brother and your boyfriend have been missing for two days. Search parties and authorities aren’t turning up any leads, and there’s been a string of unsolved missing person cases in your town recently. Looking for answers, you find a strange blue crystal and some ominous notes about a lost civilization in your brother’s room. And when you look into the crystal, you can see and hear your boyfriend?!

This fascinating horror mystery setup is how Unmaze kicks off, and the plot only thickens from there. You play as Ariadne, a young woman trying to help recover her boyfriend, Theseus, and her younger brother, Asterion, from a mystical maze that she can only see through the crystal she found in Asterion’s room. This phenomenal, weird title is definitely going in with the best Android games.

Mechanically speaking, the gameplay in Unmaze is very simple, with a unique twi…

Hone your dungeon keeping with the best RPGs for Android!

6 7 月, 2021 Rachel Mogan 0

Get lost in these big worlds on a small screen.

Role-playing games are wonderful, story-driven experiences that complement the mobile gaming experience nicely. Despite the relatively tiny mobile screens we’re used to (yes, 5.7 inches is still small by gaming standards), RPGs allow us to get lost in fanciful worlds for a while. In the case of some games, especially those ported over from PC, that “while” could be 20, 30 hours, or even more! This makes the best RPGs worth their price in the Google Play Store.

Unfortunately, like most game genres, there are some mobile duds. We’ve hand-picked the best of the best to save you the trouble of digging.

If you’re looking for more than just RPGs, be sure to check out our roundup of the best Android games out there!

Chrono Trigger

Miss Contra? Then you need to play Huntdown on Android

3 7 月, 2021 Rachel Mogan 0

Action-arcade gaming is back and better than ever with all the guns, crazy enemies, and punishing gameplay you could want.

Huntdown is immediately gripping. The game opens with static pixel art images fading in and out over a scrolling, fully voice acted narrative introduction. It’s the 21st century, but things have gone south fast in this dystopian world. War has left society in shambles and now mega-corporations vie for power against rampaging gangs. On the edges of these two factions are bounty hunters that will take out anyone for the right price.

It’s a little Mad Max, a little Bladerunner, and all 80s. From the synthwave soundtrack to the neon-lit, bombed-out, graffitied cityscapes, this game just oozes that incomparable 80s vibe. I was addicted in seconds and haven’t put the game down since. You better believe that this action platformer is 100% going on the list of our best Android games.

To make your way through this brutal new world, you’ll take on the role of three …

Point-and-click your way to the truth in Thimbleweed Park for Android

25 6 月, 2021 Rachel Mogan 0

Thimbleweed Park is a callback to they heyday of point-and-click adventure games with great graphics, solid puzzles, and a lot of heart.

There’s only so much resistance one can put up against an algorithm that desperately wants you to play a game, and ever since I became a Play Pass subscriber, Google has been dead set on getting me to play Thimbleweed Park. After two pretty heavy strategy games back to back the past couple of weeks, I decided I was ready for a change and downloaded it.

Starting, I had a vague idea of what to expect, knowing already that it was an adventure game steeped in traditions laid down by classic point-and-click adventure games (à la LucasArts and Sierra Entertainment) combined with an atmosphere harkening to The X-Files and Twin Peaks. Beyond that, I didn’t have much else to go on, and I’m numbered among the chosen ones who played classic adventure games like Maniac Mansion or Secret of Monkey Island back in the day.

That being said, Thimbleweed Park has…

Shed a sci-fi tear for your fallen empire in Crying Suns for Android

23 6 月, 2021 Rachel Mogan 0

The empire is gone. With humanity on the brink, can you fight your way back to the capital in time to save the universe?

Crying Suns is very fond of comparing itself to Faster Than Light, but I’ve never played FTL so this means absolutely nothing to me. I’m also not one to typically seek out real-time strategy games, so I’m doubly in the red when it comes to having an idea of what to expect from this title. What I do have, however, is a deep, abiding love of sci-fi mysteries and space epics, which is where Crying Suns managed to get its hooks into me.

Even with my limited frame of reference, I can say that Crying Suns has a lot going for it: simple but evocative pixel art, an ominously futuristic soundtrack, engaging combat, and mystery to unfold as you travel the cosmos in search of answers. This one is definitely going on the list of best Android games.

Our story kicks off with the camera panning down over what looks like a human incubation farm (think the scene from The Mat…
