Ticket to Earth: Shockingly deep gameplay, stellar story

9 4 月, 2021 Rachel Mogan 0

Ticket to Earth blends color-matching puzzles with turn-based strategic RPG elements to form a world all its own.

Developed and published by Robot Circus in 2017, Ticket to Earth isn’t new. Still, having just discovered this gem thanks to Play Pass, I now feel obligated to tell absolutely everyone about this hit you probably missed.

Ticket to Earth opens on an interstellar colonial conflict. The story’s depth took me by surprise, with a gripping plot that pulled me in right away. 90 years before the game’s opening, humans traveled to a planet 10-years journey away in search of a resource called Nitrium. After striking proverbial gold on an alien world, a mining operation was established, and New Providence was born.

Rose dreams of someday being able to board the starship that will take her to Earth.

Flash forward to the present, and we now take on the role of Rose. Not lucky enough to be born into the ruling class that dominates New Providence, Rose dreams of someday bein…

Crash Bandicoot blazes past the competition in his mobile debut

Bringing one of the Old Gods of gaming to the mobile space with panache and grace.

There’s a new Crash Bandicoot game in town, and you may be shocked to discover that it is not a canon installment. With little fanfare before launch, Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! came out for mobile at the tail end of last month, and it’s been doing absolute gangbusters ever since. Now, I’m one of those 90s kids who was raised on the likes of Crash and Spyro, so I feel very protective of the Crash legacy. I wasn’t particularly pleased to hear that a non-platforming Crash game was coming to Android. (What a missed opportunity, right?) I have to admit that I’m pleasantly surprised with the quality that On the Run! is bringing to the table.

On The Run! is yet another entry into the endless-runner genre, but it has made the atmospheric transition to mobile very well, and it looks and sounds fantastic. The soundtrack is fun, upbeat, quirky, and immediately recognizable as Crash Bandicoot. If you had p…

Get a sneak peak at apps and games before launch

A first look at new apps and titles before they release

As Bethesda and CD Projekt Red have both learned in recent years, betas are pretty important. They serve to build hype in the community for an upcoming product and, more importantly, as a test run for the developers to put their product through the wringer and see how it comes out on the other side. Some people love beta-testing new apps and games. If you fit into this demographic, you’ll want to sign up for early access and beta-testing through the Google Play Store. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get an inside look at apps and games before they officially hit the Play Store!

Get a hearty dose of existential horror in Samsara Room

19 3 月, 2021 Rachel Mogan 0

Samsara Room manages to build a unique and subtly disturbing experience out of an initially minimal premise.

Samsara Room is a simple yet hard to describe game. Developed and published by Rusty Lake, the makers of the acclaimed Cube Escape games and the broader Rusty Lake universe of games, this point-and-click adventure plays a bit like an escape room. Naturally, your goal is to…escape the room. A riveting premise, I know. Here’s the thing; I can explain the premise and the gameplay, but the FEELING you get from this indie title is hard to put into words. It’s a strange mix of innocuous pastel colors with a disquieting undercurrent of cosmic horror. In short, this game is right up my alley. This one is definitely going on the list of my best free games.

Adding to its straightforward premise, Samsara Room couldn’t be more minimalistic gameplay-wise. You just tap the screen. That’s…

Forgotton Anne is a forgotten mobile game that deserves to be revisited

12 3 月, 2021 Rachel Mogan 0

Forgotton Anne isn’t a perfect game on mobile, but it excels dramatically in the art and storytelling departments.

Developed by ThroughLine Games and released in 2018, Forgotton Anne (and no, that’s not a misspelling) is instantly intriguing. You play as the eponymous Anne, a young woman working for a mysterious old man in a realm full of forgotten objects that have magically come to life. If you are a fan of mysteries or puzzle games, this is easily one of the best games on Android.

I won’t spoil too much for you since this game revolves entirely around its story, but putting the pieces of this mini-mystery into place will take you through a unique and memorable world full of fascinating characters and lush environments. The game is initially free to play, but that’s really just the demo. After making a bit of progress, you will eventually be asked to pay $7 if you want to continue. The good news is if you buy, there are no ads or in-app purchases.
