Who would’ve thought that blood, sex, and embroidery could come together in a beautiful way? But yes, they can, because it’s Game of Thrones.
In a Belfast, Northern Ireland museum, a team of embroiderers have come together to depict all eight seasons of the hit HBO drama, complete with gory decapitations, blood red weddings, and grisly battles, in a 300-foot (90-meter) tapestry.
The recreation is being displayed at the Ulster Museum in Belfast.
The show was produced and mainly filmed in studios in Belfast and in the Northern Irish countryside.
“A tapestry is, more than anything else, a great storytelling device,” Valerie Wilson, costume and textiles curator at National Museums Northern Ireland, told Agence-France Presse (AFP).
“The length of the tapestry allows the story to unfold, so in many ways it’s the perfect medium for telling the story of the Game of Thrones project.”
The tapestry is created in the style of the Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered cloth nearly 230 feet long, which depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England concerning William, Duke of Normandy, and Harold, Earl of Wessex, later King of England, and culminating in the Battle of Hastings.
“This tapestry references the Bayeux Tapestry in that it has a series of repeated icons through it,” Wilson told AFP.
A team of 30 embroiderers worked on the tapestry for two years. The panels of the piece are woven by machine before the finishing touches are stitched by hand to depict the characters and highlights from the show, which hit the screens in 2011 and ended in May.
Since it depicts scenes of sex and violence (just like the actual show), the museum display comes with a warning: “Due to the depiction of graphic scenes, viewing of the tapestry is not suitable for anyone under the age of 18.”
The Game of Thrones tapestry is on display at the Ulster Museum through July 28, 2019. It will then travel to France, where it will hang next to the next to the actual Bayeux Tapestry.
