One of the best ways these days to lure players into your free-to-play mainstream mobile game money trap is to show off the power of the #brands at your disposal. Why else do you think Nintendo slapped Mario on a puzzle game? And one of the most efficient formulas for doing this is developing a card game that’s vaguely strategic but pretty much an excuse to encourage players to collect all of their favorite characters at any cost. Star Wars does it. Marvel does. And now Capcom does it.
Teppen is basically Capcom vs. card games.
In this card game players build up a deck of classic Capcom video characters. This includes Ryu and Chun-Li from Street Fighter, the heroes of Mega Man and Devil May Cry, Resident Evil big bad Albert Wesker, as well as reps from Monster Hunter and even Darkstalkers. It’s the kind of lineup you would expect from a Marvel vs. Capcom game, although the weirdly hardcore visual style is thankfully more appealing than the recent Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite.
Teppen’s gameplay meanwhile seems like a more action-packed take on something like Hearthstone. Players take turns laying active cards onto the battlefield. But much of the action occurs in five real-time minutes, so you have to think but think fast. It sounds appropriate considering the company’s fighting game background. Is Teppen the Puzzle Fighter of collectible card games? Play it for yourself to find out.
Teppen is available now on iOS and Android. For more on mobile games learn more about the upcoming Apple Arcade subscription service and read our hands-on impressions of The Elder Scrolls: Blades.
