The brick-breaking battle royale game Tetris 99 is one of my favorite video games of the year. But what makes it even cooler is that it’s just the next piece of the perfect puzzle game’s ongoing renaissance. 2018 also had an incredibly dope Tetris game, the utterly entrancing Tetris Effect for PlayStation 4. And if you missed out on the shared dream the first time, you’ll have another chance to join our consciousness when the game comes to PC.
From the creators of trippy musical puzzle game Lumines, Tetris Effect uses synchronized lights and colors and sounds to make the classic Tetris formula dig even deeper into your brain, to become an emotional experience blurring mental stimulation and physical reflex. Part of what made it so effective was the support for virtual reality, melting you into the game’s alluring artificial existence even more intimately.
On PC Tetris Effect will support Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, headsets even more powerful and clear than PlayStation VR. So your puzzle nirvana should reach even higher levels of bliss. Even without a headset though this Ultimate Version supports increased 4K resolutions to make the game look even more beautifully crystalline.
If there’s one thing about this Tetris Effect release that goes against the game’s spirit of global cooperation and unity is that it’s exclusive to the Epic Games Store. But that’s still better than being locked to a single console for months. Tetris Effect is so good it should just transcend all petty console and PC wars. Plus it would be killer on Switch. Tetris Effect comes to PC in just a few days on July 23. Watch the video below on why we love the original Tetris so much.
