Video game console wars are just a state of mind, man. They don’t really exist. Banjo-Kazooie are in Smash Bros. Sony and Microsoft are teaming up for cloud computing. The whole industry is trying to get out of paying extra tariffs. If these corporations can, however cynically, let love and unity into their hearts then so can you.
Even if you just have one console, there are plenty of great games to play if you know where to look. But you could also just buy yourself out of the console wars entirely by getting every box. And now Origin PC has taken console peace to the next galactic brain level by mushing these machines all together into one case along with a gaming PC for good measure.
In 2009, a then-new Origin PC showed off the Big O, a custom gaming rig that included the very PC-like Xbox 360. Current gaming consoles the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have only gotten even more similar to the PC in their components. And now this 10th anniversary Big O merges the two rivals along with the Nintendo Switch.
This new Big O includes the motherboards of the high-end Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro with their own original operating systems. There’s no disc drive but each “console” gets 2TB of SSD Seagate Barracuda storage for building robust digital libraries. Each also features vital liquid cooling powered by Origin’s custom Cryogenic Hard Line technique. And as for the Switch, Origin just built a dock right into the case for you to slot the tablet into. It’s based on original parts so it shouldn’t brick the system the way some third-party docks do.
And as we said, there’s a whole gaming PC packed in here, too. The new Big O packs an Intel Core i9-9900K processor, NVIDIA Titan RTX graphics card, 64GB of Corsair Dominator Platinum RAM, a 14TB drive, built-in 4K 60FPS capture card, and all sorts of fancy flashing lights and gamer glass.
Origin’s Big O isn’t a product you can actually buy. The manufacturer is just showing off. And why spend what would surely be an ungodly amount of money for this when the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett are just a year away. But this is a pleasing glimpse into a unified gaming console future. Til all are one.
