An 11-year-old boy is recovering from minor injuries after a fishing accident temporarily left a hook in his eyelid on Aug. 2.
Manning Ruff was fishing at a lake near his family home in Summerville, South Carolina, when he hooked a tiny bass, Fox 35 Orlando News reported. While he reeled in his catch, the hook reportedly became loose and got stuck in Manning’s eye and cheek. Daniel Ruff, Manning’s dad, posted pictures of the incident on Facebook, which has received more than 700 views so far.
Once he realized what happened, Manning rode his bike home and calmly told his dad that he had a hook stuck in his eye. Manning’s dad then took him to the emergency room, where they were able to safely remove the hook from Manning’s eyelid and cheek.
“When we arrived at the ER they said, ‘We are going to give you pain medicine,’ and he said, ‘No thanks, just get it out,’” Daniel wrote in the Facebook post. “As they were working on him, he just grit his teeth and let them work.”
Daniel also cautioned people to make sure to have proper safety equipment for their fishing trips.
“Lessons learned,” Daniel added. “Sunglasses and a pocket knife are mandatory while fishing.”
