The Nintendo Switch is an amazing portable gaming system. It’s even more capable when you pop it into its dock. But while the Switch itself is built for travel, the dock definitely is not. There’s really not much to it, but the bulky plastic shell takes up a fair amount of space.
Enter Human Things, who make “epic things for elevated play experiences.” The epic thing they cooked up for Switch owners is the Genki Covert Dock.
It’s pretty much the same size as a standard USB wall charger but it does way more than just juice up your Switch and its accessories. Despite being 22 percent smaller than Nintendo’s AC adapter, the Covert Dock is a full-on Switch dock alternative that fits right in your pocket.
Unlike some other solutions that are available, the Covert Dock supplies the power. Just flip out the prongs and plug it in to any standard AC outlet. Run a USB-C cable from the Dock to your Switch and HDMI from the Dock to an external display and you’re ready to game in TV mode.
While a spare first-party dock will set you back $85, Human Things is offering the Covert Dock to early backers for just $49.
The lower price point doesn’t mean that Human Things skimped on components, however. They’re sourcing quality components and will be getting the Covert Dock certified to ensure it conforms to standards.
The Dock features a custom charging chip that will only use a Switch-friendly profile when supplying power to your precious portable and will stick to USB power delivery standards for other devices.
Human Things has even designed the Covert Dock so that its firmware can be upgraded. In the event that Nintendo makes a minor tweak to the Switch somewhere down the road, you’ll be able to update the Covert Dock to keep things running smoothly.
