A Tesla electric vehicle on Saturday caught fire after crashing into a tow truck on a Moscow motorway.
In a video posted to Instagram by user gagorun (below), you can see two small explosions in quick succession, engulfing the car in flames and smoke.
Oddly, no one seems too bothered by the eruption: Neither the videographer nor their chauffeur makes a sound; other passersby continue down the road, as if nothing happened.
State-run news agency RIA shared a clip of the Tesla Model 3 traveling in the left lane of Moscow’s Ring Road (MKAD), before colliding with a tow truck parked by a safety fence around 9 p.m. Moscow time.
Driver Alexei Tretyakov told REN TV that he was in Autopilot drive assistance mode, still holding the steering wheel, when his Tesla Model 3 collided with the truck.
Reportedly cruising at the speed limit (62 mph), the 41-year-old financial market expert and his two children suffered minor injuries: he broke his leg, while the kids were bruised.
All three escaped the vehicle before the blast.
Tesla has long stood by safety claims for its electric vehicles, repeatedly reminding owners that Autopilot is “intended for use with a fully attentive driver, who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any time.”
But that hasn’t stopped people from dying.
Last year, Apple engineer Walter Huang died when his Autopilot-engaged Model X crashed into a traffic barrier in California. His family in May filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Tesla, claiming the self-driving feature was “defective.”
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
