Apple is expanding contactless student IDs to more U.S. universities.
Starting this fall, 100,000-plus pupils will be able to tap their iPhone or Apple Watch to enter dorms, the library, and campus events, or pay for laundry, snacks, and meals around campus.
A dozen schools have been added to Apple’s lineup:
- Clemson University (South Carolina)
- Georgetown University (Washington, D.C.)
- University of Tennessee
- University of Kentucky
- University of San Francisco (California)
- University of Vermont
- Arkansas State University
- South Dakota State University
- Norfolk State University (Virginia)
- Louisburg College (North Carolina)
- University of North Alabama
- Chowan University (North Carolina)
“We’re happy to add to the growing number of schools that are making getting around campus easier than ever with iPhone and Apple Watch,” Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of internet services, said in a statement. “We know students love this feature.”
Already attached to their handsets, millennials are more likely to forget their wallet or misplace their ID than not have a smartphone within reach.

More than 100,000 college students will soon be able to add their student ID to iPhone and Apple Watch (via Apple)
Folks can use contactless badges anywhere physical cards are accepted—on and off campus.
School credentials on iPhone and Apple Watch are protected by two-factor authentication, according to Cupertino.
Since its October 2018 launch, contactless student IDs have been used to purchase 1.25 million meals and open more than 4 million doors across campuses by just tapping their iDevice.
Duke University, University of Oklahoma, University of Alabama, Temple University, Johns Hopkins University, Marshall University, and Mercer University already offer their students, faculty, and staff contactless IDs in Wallet.
The function requires an iPhone 6/6 Plus or Apple Watch Series 1 and later, an Apple ID signed into iCloud, the latest version of the eAccounts app (available from the App Store), and an up-to-date OS.
