There is nothing wrong with acknowledging success: Amazon Original TV show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel this week celebrated 20 Emmy nominations with some 1950s-inspired nostalgia.
Nearly 30 Los Angeles-based businesses—from salons and restaurants to movie theaters and hotels—offered marvelous markdowns on Thursday.
“Treat yourself to 1959 pricing at some of the most iconic retailers in Los Angeles,” the Maisel Day website said, inviting locals to enjoy a haircut, movie, deli sandwich, and milkshake, all for less than $5.
Not everyone was onboard with the throwback campaign, though.
Santa Monica Police briefly shut down a 30-cents-per-gallon promotion for gas due to traffic delays caused by eager customers, according to ABC 7 reporter John Gregory.
The Chevron Santa Monica garnered so much attention from motorists (who normally pay upwards of $4/gallon), police issued traffic warnings recommending folks avoid the area.
Amazon did not immediately respond to Geek’s request for comment.
Maisel Day wasn’t just about the savings, though.
It was also about the Emmy Awards, for which the show earned nominations for outstanding comedy series, directing (Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino), lead actress (Rachel Brosnahan), supporting actor (Tony Shalhoub), and supporting actress (Alex Borstein and Marin Hinkle), among others.
“When it comes to Emmy campaigns, you have to look at how you address voters in phase two, and so I think we know that so many of the Academy voters live and work in and around Los Angeles,” Amazon’s Director of Awards Debra Birnbaum told the Los Angeles Times.
“So whereas we can’t talk directly to them with this,” she continued, “I think the intention of an event like this is, of course, going to sweep up the TV Academy voters, and they’ll definitely get their notice.”
