Sony has acquired Insomniac Games. No, you aren’t reading a headline form like 15 years ago. The developer has always been close with the publisher. They created Spyro the Dragon and Ratchet & Clank, PlayStation mascots iconic enough to get an iffy animated movie. But they’ve technically been independent until now.
Insomniac now joins teams like Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch as a wholly owned first-party PlayStation developer. And you can guess why. Insomniac’s exclusive 2018 Spider-Man PlayStation 4 game was a smash success critically and commercially, the developer’s biggest hit yet at over 13 million copies sold. So it’s practically a no-brainer we’ll see more of Insomniac’s open-world take on the colorful Marvel hero on PlayStation 5. Earlier PS5 demos even used Spider-Man to show off faster load times.
Along with future Spider-Man games, many speculate that Insomniac’s Oculus Rift games in development will shift to PlayStation VR. One this is for certain though. Be glad Sunset Overdrive finally got a PC release because Insomniac definitely won’t be working with Microsoft anytime soon on a follow-up to the Xbox One launch game.
“Joining the WWS family gives Insomniac even greater opportunities to achieve our studio vision of making positive and lasting impressions on people’s lives,” said Ted Price, Insomniac Games founder and CEO, in a statement. “We’ve enjoyed a special relationship with PlayStation practically since our inception. Our partnership amplifies our potential.”
