Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima’s first piece of inscrutable video game art following his breakup with Konami and Metal Gear, is just a few weeks away. And as we learn more about the game, the more confused we get. Ropes and time rain and babies in jars were just the beginning.
At Gamescom 2019 we actually got to see some Death Stranding gameplay in action, not that it really clears anything up. Players can strategically pee on things to cause mushrooms to grow. But don’t even try to look for Norman Reedus’s penis because you can’t find it.
However, the most hilarious revelation was Death Stranding’s latest “celebrity” cameo. The game is chock full of Kojima’s friends including directors Guillermo del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn. But the one man who has truly, openly, and publically loved Kojima with all of his heart has been games journalist and awards show magnate Geoff Keighley. Kojima finally returned the favor by scanning in Keighley’s digital likeness (but unfortunately not his voice) to play the holographic character Ludens Fan, someone obsessed with the main character Sam Porter Bridges even if Sam doesn’t care who he is. Amazing.
Keighley may the video game journalist most deserving of a Death Stranding cameo but why should he be the only one. There’s still time between now and November to scan in more. Here are some other games journalists we’d like to see in Death Stranding.
