‘Jumanji’ Video Game Seems Pretty Meta

Jumanji is a movie about a magical board game that spills out into the real world pulling players into a jungle adventure. But the 2017 reboot Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle updated the premise by making it about a magical video game that sucked players into a digital jungle adventure. It made a ton of money and there’s a sequel on the way this holiday. So we get why they’re making an actual Jumanji video game. Still, doesn’t that seem pretty meta?

Check out this first trailer for Jumanji: The Video Game.

Like Jumanji, the video game, Jumanji: The Video Game is a co-op action-adventure where players control the four different heroes. You’ve got The Rock as beefy Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Jack Black as nerdy Professor Shelly Oberon, Karen Gillan as ersatz Lara Croft Ruby Roundhouse, and Kevin Hart as tiny zoologist Mouse Finbar.

The trailer showed off hand-to-hand combat, tossing poison at foes, and navigating jungle traps, with different characters overcoming challenges suited to their skills. The game lets you team up online, locally, or with AI teammates.

We don’t know yet how meta Jumanji: The Video Game is willing to get though. Does it just present itself as an actual version of the video game the kids play in the movie? Or will it acknowledge the “real world” as well? Did the developers at Outright Games actually figure out a way to transport you into the game? Or at the very least is there virtual reality support? And the most important question of all, will The Rock play Danny DeVito in this game, too?

We’ll find out when Jumanji: The Video Game launches this November for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Meanwhile, Jumanji: The Next Level is in theaters this December.
