Geek Pick: Ring Stick Up Cam Battery Is Standalone Security

Go to the front door of anyone’s parents’ house and you’ll see that Ring is the brand to beat when it comes to smart home security devices. More than a doorbell with a camera, Ring devices help keep your house safe and monitored through the power of the internet. And that’s still the case with the new Ring Stick Up Cam Battery.

While many smart home products need to interface with some kind of hub to function, the Ring Stick Up Cam Battery works completely on its own with no wires either indoors or outdoors thanks to the waterproofing. Just place or mount the stand on whatever surface you want.

At this point the folks are Ring are pros at making home security cameras. The general principle remains the same, monitor the area, and alert the user and/or authorities while blaring the siren when something seems amiss. Along with letting you view the video feed, the mobile app even includes as database of other attempted house crimes in your connected neighborhood. New here though are nifty features like digital assistant voice commands and a wider, sharper picture with the 1080p motion-detecting camera.

It’s not without issues though. The base $180 price is already expensive and on top of that you need to pay for a subscription to keep recorded video footage in the cloud. More philosophically though, many law enforcement agencies partner with Ring. On one hand, that makes perfect sense for home security. But who wants to live in a tech-powered police sate?
