Good news for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge visitors that want to take their souvenirs home with them: After an earlier ban, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will now officially allow the “thermal detonator”-shaped Coca-Cola bottles in checked luggage and carry-on bags on flights.
Officials from the agency announced the news last week, detailing that while the themed soda bottles could be perceived as “replica hand grenades,” they have changed their policy and will allow tourists to take the item home with them, albeit with some stipulations.
“The issue concerning Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge-themed soda bottles has recently been brought to our attention by the general public, as these items could reasonably be seen by some as replica hand grenades,” the TSA said in a statement released last week. “We appreciate the concerns being raised, because replica explosives are not permitted in either carry-on or checked bags. We have completed our review, and instructed our officers to treat these as an oversized liquid.”
The agency, however, recommends tourists store them in checked baggage, or empty the bottles of liquid before placing in carry-on bags.
“Because these bottles contain liquids larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters), they should be put in checked baggage or emptied to be brought on as carry-on item,” the TSA said. “TSA officers will maintain the discretion to prohibit any item through the screening checkpoint if they believe it poses a security threat.”
The original ban resulted after a curious flyer inquired on Twitter about the “thermal detonators”-themed bottles on Aug. 13. TSA responded with “Thanks for asking! Replica and inert explosives aren’t allowed in either carry-on or checked bags.”
Some people commented on the confusing statement, however, as others have reported encountering no issues when they boarded flights with their souvenir bottles from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland, which opened to much fanfare in May.
“Which is it? Allowed in checked luggage? Allowed in carry-on as long as [it’s] empty of liquid? Or neither?” asked one Twitter user. “Policy should be uniform and enforced [in] the same manner in every airport.”
And on the topic of Star Wars souvenirs, fans may be glad to hear that lightsabers are allowed on carry-on bags and checked luggage.
“Sadly, the technology doesn’t currently exist to create a real lightsaber,” the TSA said on its website. “However, you can pack a toy lightsaber in your carry-on or checked bag. May the force be with you.”
Droids are also allowed.
