For 20 years, Lego has been turning out one amazing Star Wars set after another. Today they’re unveiling an epic addition to the Ultimate Collectors Series to mark the anniversary.
This is the UCS Imperial Star Destroyer, a stunningly-detailed tribute to one of the most memorable opening scenes in cinematic history. It’s not Lego’s first take on the iconic ship, but it’s by far the biggest and most complex.
The first UCS Imperial Star Destroyer came out way back in 2002. When its 3106 pieces were fully assembled, it measured just under two feet long. Total weight: about two pounds.
For their 2019 remake, Lego has added more than 1600 additional pieces. The new UCS Imperial Star Destroyer puts those extra pieces good use by increasing its span to a jaw-dropping 43 inches. It stands 14 inches tall and is actually wider than the 2002 version was long.
To make it totally clear just how massive the Devastator is, Lego included a tiny, brick-built Tantive IV. It’s positively dwarfed by the Star Destroyer… just like it was in the opening scene in A New Hope. The Devastator is armed to the teeth and ready to swallow up rebel ships.
Lego has thrown in a pair of minifigures for good measure: an Imperial officer and a crew member. They’re included to stand attentively next to an informational plaque that lists key details about the ship (the 1600 meter long one from the Star Wars universe, not the Lego set).

A set this spectacular doesn’t come along all that often, but when it does… well, it comes with an equally spectacular price tag. The UCS Imperial Star Destroyer will sell for $699.99 when it goes on sale October 1.
Lego VIPs can order the set starting on September 18, and you can bet they will. $699 might seem steep, but it’s still $200 shy of the most expensive UCS set — the 7541-piece Millennium Falcon.
