12 programming mistakes to avoid

If you need any better proof that code is art, look no further than how the programmers view their mistakes. Just as the world is filled with wildly divergent opinions about painters, architects, writers, and poets, the realm of programmers can’t ag… 閱讀全文

10 bad programming habits we secretly love

We’ve all done it: snagged a cookie when mom wasn’t looking, had a little too much wine for dinner, let the car sit in a parking spot after the meter expired. We’ve even gone around Deadman’s Curve a bit too fast. And yes, we’ve all violated any num… 閱讀全文

10 software development cults to join

Every programmer knows the feeling. You’ve written a few lines, tested them, and checked them into some repository. Now is the time to stop, take a breather, maybe reflect upon the majesty of it all, and then get back to obsessing about your latest programmer cult.

It doesn’t matter if you started your first programming class this fall or if you’ve been writing bit-banging code since it had to be toggled into the front panel of an Altair. There’s only so much fun to be had talking about mundane things like correctness or accuracy. Only the client prattles on about whether the code meets the specs.

The real adrenaline rushes come from wandering the moors like a poet, tormented and bedeviled by some finer nuance of the art of writing code. Gluing together variables and functions is boring. Life is only worth living when you jump on some bandwagon, fall in line behind some charismatic genius, and join some strident debate about the details of telling computers what to do.

Why developers hate low-code

The suits love the idea of “low code” tools. To them, less code means less work and less work means speedier projects, faster satisfaction, leaner budgets, and, ultimately, a fuller bowl of gravy for doling out big bonuses to those same suits. Who doesn’t like any of these things?

Developers for one. Oh, they like these grand promises in theory (who doesn’t want to do less work?) but they know there’s often a big gap between the theory of easier development and the reality that sets in when the deadline gets close and the tools don’t do exactly what they’re told.

Low-code solutions have a place. Programmers appreciate their ability to deliver something that works in less time with less effort. They know that low-code tools can produce a decent mechanism that can search, sort, and otherwise juggle tabular data. They’re happy to use them when the time is right.

Tiny clouds taking on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud

Clouds have to be big, right? If the best feature of the cloud is that you can just click and start up a machine in seconds, it follows that there must be vast warehouses loaded with computers out there somewhere. Huge warehouses filled with tall racks of machines arranged in endless rows, like a modern digital version of the ending of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

The word “big” is relative, though. The biggest clouds—AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform—may attract much of the market share, but they’re far from the only companies in the game. Some smaller companies are developing niches and finding a way to compete even though their racks of machines are miniscule, at least compared to the big three.
