‘True Detective Pikachu’ Parody Trailer Is Certainly Something

If you thought the trailers for Detective Pikachu didn’t feature enough existential angst you’re kind of a weirdo, but at least there’s a trailer that should be more your style.

Youtube channel Sam and Bill Comedy in association with Bad Duck Media have produced a real trailer for a fake TV show that would turn the lovable electric rodent into a Rustin Cohle-type resembling something out of the Soulcalibur VI character creator. It’s pretty well done, and while the visage of Pikachu as a real person will haunt my dreams long after my soul has departed from my body, I kind of want to see more this particular fever dream. Make it happen, HBO and The Pokémon Company!

How D’Vorah Has Changed In Mortal Kombat 11

Although Mortal Kombat 11 brings back a number of iconic characters, it doesn’t leave them untouched. While new characters like Cetrion can bring something entirely new to the table, one of the most exciting things about fighting game sequels is seeing how older characters have changed.

D’Vorah is one of many characters introduced in Mortal Kombat X who has made the return trip to Mortal Kombat 11. Her mix of bugs, claws, and tricks gave her a number of interesting tools to work with, which made her satisfying to learn. After speaking with senior NetherRealm QA analyst Steve Brownback about how she’s evolved for the latest entry, it looks like she’s become trickier, thanks to the game’s custom variations system.

Like many characters in Mortal Kombat 11, D’Vorah’s default moveset should feel familiar to those who played her in Mortal Kombat X; Her Ovipositor Rush and Bug Blast attacks are still at her side. She does get a few upgrades this time around, though. “Her ovipositors are always out this time, whereas in Mortal Kombat X they only came out for moves,” Brownback says. “So she uses them more than ever.”

But once you start diving into her variations, things quickly start to go off the rails. “[She has] moves that weren’t even close to Mortal Kombat X moves,” Brownback states. After getting the rundown on her, I’m inclined to believe him.

A few of her new moves give her some cool options in combat. With the right variations, she can launch a slow-moving insect across the screen, and amplify it to launch two of them simultaneously. You can also deck her out to actually use her wings to fly around the screen and drop a bug-bomb from on high.

From there, things only get weirder. “She has this new mechanic where she actually attaches insects to you, and they’ll float around you, and then she can have them bite you when she chooses,” Brownback tells me. The opponent can’t shake these off and she can stack several of them at a time, so if these bug attacks land, you’re at risk of taking damage at any point she chooses to “detonate” the bugs while they’re near you.

She also has an ability that reminds me of a guest character from Mortal Kombat X: Jason Voorhees. “There’s an ability you can equip where, when she dies, one of her babies comes out of her, and you control the baby,” Brownback says. “It has its own moveset, and then [your opponent has] to kill the baby to actually kill her.” The move takes up two of the three slots you can use to equip moves, however, so it’s a major gamble.

Despite her new tricks, her gameplan is still similar. “She’s still this really good mid-range character,” Brownback says. “If you don’t want to get in close, and you want to just pepper them with projectiles, she has one where a bug crawls out of the ground and will explode next to them.”

Sticking to Mortal Kombat 11’s overall direction of not giving characters too many strong low and overhead options, D’Vorah has a good low combo-starter, but no great overhead. She can lean into close-range aggression, however, thanks to an equippable overhead spinning move she can use in the air. “If you’re playing a match where you just want to get in, do your mixups, you could use that overhead move,” Brownback says. You could also combine a few of her moves to give her decent mix-up options; you could equip the low-hitting crawling bug attack, then use it to get in close and attack with the airborne spin move.

The changes look to lean more into D’Vorah’s insect side, both mechanically and aesthetically. While it might make her look and feel less human, Brownback is personally a fan of the switch. “She looks gross in this game,” he says affectionately. “I thought she looked kind of adorable in the last game. But in this one she’s just actually monstrous.”

Games Need To Stop Doing That Thing Where It Looks Like You Have Zero Health But You’re Not Actually Dead

Hey there! I know your online mouse clicks are valuable. Thanks for using them on this article after seeing a headline that’s fairly self-explanatory.

Since the headline sums up my thoughts, I’m not going to waste your time with 1,000 more words on why the thing in the headline is bad. It happened to me in Sekiro and I wanted to vent.

Please click on the other pages of our website. I promise there are more words in them. Bye!

Sega Announces Multiple Games For The 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Click here to watch embedded media

Publisher: SEGA
Release: Winter 2019
Platform: Switch

Sega has announced four separate games to coincide with the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, though three of them are versions of the one we already know: Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games.

In a trailer mixes footage of the four games with a quasi-inspirational montage of old Olympic footage, we see the four games in action. First, there’s Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game, which looks to be a more traditional collection of games based on Olympic sports. This one has regular people compete in the games instead of iconic, disproportionate mascots. This one is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC sometime in 2020.

From there, things get a bit funky. There’s of course a new version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games coming this winter, but this one is Switch exclusive. If you don’t own a Swtich, you can still get your fix this summer by going to an arcade to play Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Arcade Edition, which will probably not have Yun or Yang in it. Finally, we have the iOS version of the game, which will exclude half of series’ namesake and simply be titled Sonic at the Olympic Games. That one is also out this summer.

What To Watch This Weekend – PAX East, League of Legends, And Street Fighter V

This weekend brings us another PAX, more League of Legends, and some pretty neat events in Asia.

The Northern California Regionals are a major event in many fighting game communities, so you can catch hotly contested events for Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Windjammers, and more. (Streams and Schedule)

The League of Legends LCS is getting serious, as we move out of the best-of-one group stage and move into the best-of-five playoffs. This means there are only two matches this weekend (one today and one tomorrow), but the stakes are higher. (Stream / Schedule)

PAX East is this weekend, bringing with it a ton of panels, at least some of which you’ll probably be interested in. (Streams / Schedule)

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is having a major event in Tokyo this weekend, so if you have your timezone differences worked out, you can watch some of the action with Japanese commentary. If you can’t watch on Japan hours, the VODs are always there for you. (Stream)

The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive StarSeries begins its seventh season today, bringing some of the top teams in the scene together once for a shot at the $250,000 first-place prize. (Stream / Schedule)

We also have a PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds in Taiwan this weekend, so you can brush up on the language and get some PUBG viewing in at the same time! (Stream)

That’s it for this weekend! Let us know if we missed an event, or if there’s a scene you’d like us to cover, in the comments.

New Gameplay Today – Samurai Shodown

Click here to watch embedded media

Samurai Shodown is back this year! Whether you played SamSho (that’s what cool people call the series to save time) when it released over 20 years ago, or have seen some of its characters pop up in other games, the return of the classic sword-fighting franchise should be a welcome sight. That sight happens to pretty nice, too, what with the watercolor look and all.

Jeff Cork and Leo Vader join me on the latest episode of New Gameplay Today to show off a few matches of the latest entry, talk about SNK’s recent history, and more.

Atlus Drops Teaser Trailer For Persona 5: The Royal

Atlus has been teasing something called “Persona 5 R” for some time, but their latest teaser trailer gives us a bit more info the title.

Now titled Persona 5: The Royal, it’s not clear whether this is a sequel, expansion, or updated version of Persona 5, but I’d lean toward the latter. The Royal takes place in the same locale as Persona 5 and introduces a new red-headed character, who doesn’t seem to be into the methods of the Phantom Thieves (according to a translation from Gematsu) and would rather solve her problems on her own. Whether they’ll be an ally, foe, or (in a longshot guess here) a new playable character remains to be seen.

It isn’t a ton of info to go on, but don’t worry; Atlus also announced we’d be getting more info on April 24, the date of the “Persona Super Live” concert in Japan.
