5 Best Snake Pokémon Designs (& 5 That Are Too Silly)

One of the more endearing aspects of the Pokémon series is the unique designs of each creature. Over the years, each generation has added a slate of Pokémon that has people falling in love because of the way they look. Of course, there are also a few clunkers that leave people scratching their heads.

One common thread in Pokémon is how creatures look like real-life animals. A great example is snakes as there are quite a few slithery takes on snakes in the Pokémon universe. While some are excellent to look at, there are others that weird fans out. Here are some of the best and worst snake-like designs.

10 Best: Ekans

Part of the original generation, Ekans is as true to a snake form a Pokémon has gotten. The purple poison-type creature has classic thin pupils that some snakes possess.

It also has a long rattle at the end of the tail to show off its main weapon. It’s behavior even matches that of a snake, living in tall grass in forest-like areas hunting down bird eggs to eat. It’s not a flashy design by any stretch, but considering this was one of the early Pokémon, it makes sense to have Ekans’ design to be straightforward.

9 Worst: Dratini

Some of these designs are not directly related to snakes but are very snake-like in terms of being serpentine Pokémon. Take Dratini, a Dragon-type Pokémon that first appeared in Generation I as well. While the critter is adorable, it is a little goofy-looking. Dratini has big eyes and two white fins on either side of its head and is technically based on a serpent.

Like a snake, it sheds its skin as it continues to grow and could be as long as six feet. There’s a lot going on with its face but the rest of it is rather dull and isn’t as detailed.

8 Best: Dragonair

Dratini evolves into Dragonair, which on face value looks the same only its bigger. However, the lack-of-detail problem is not as much the case for Dragonair. Dragonair is a long serpentine Pokémon with the same big eyes as its smaller form. Its fins are now wings on top of its head.

The dot that was on its forehead is now growing into a horn. There are now three orbs on its body, one on its neck and two at the end of its tail. It’s the little things that make a difference between a more dull Pokémon and an interesting one.

7 Worst: Zygarde’s 50% Form

Zygarde is one of the more strange Pokémon in the universe. The strange creature has many forms depending on how many cells and cores it has grown. In its half from, the Zygarde takes on the shape of a serpentine Pokémon. T

here is a lot going on with this form as it looks borderline monstrous. Its eyes are made of four hexagons. There are five protrusions that are sticking out from the back of its neck as if its frill. There are also several tendrils on either side of its chest and on its tail. It is too much to take seriously, especially with the massive frill.

6 Best: Serperior

Although its early forms stand on legs, Serperior goes snake-like for the final evolution. It’s also one of the prettier Pokémon out there. The head of the Pokémon looks like it is blooming out of a flower as two yellow extensions and two dark green extensions poke out from its neck area surrounding the head.

A couple of green leaves are sticking out from the end of the tail. There are some intricate patterns on the Grass-type‘s skin that stand out as well. For example, there are light green curls that come down from the top of the head.

5 Worst: Silicobra

This sad-looking creature is a little too sad to be taken seriously. Silicobra is meant to resemble a small snake, which it does to an extent. Its snout and mouth are very similar to a snake and most of its body is serpentine-like.

However, the snake has big yellow pouches above its eyes that give it a droopy expression and the pouch that is wrapped around its neck looks like it doesn’t quite belong. The colors are a little dull as well, but that may be because it blends into the ground as a ground-type.

4 Best: Seviper

Seviper is what happens if someone looked at the dullness of an Ekans and hit the upgrade button. Seviper is usually seen folded up like an accordion, but don’t underestimate its length. The snake also has a ton of different textures on it, including yellow hexagon markings that run randomly across its body.

There are also purple scars in different places and yellow bumps that run across its underside. The two long fangs and its blade-like tail round out what is a hardcore Poison-type Pokémon.

3 Worst: Sandaconda

Did someone order donuts? Oh no, that’s just Sandaconda. Silicobra had it bad but its evolution is even worse. Its head is just fine as it is shaped like a white snake with the usual snout and small fangs. Then comes its brown pouch which is wrapped largely around its neck.

The rest of the body slightly matches the pouch it terms of the markings on it. Its white body is in a spiral and continues to wrap around until it becomes just the tail, which has nothing super interesting on it. If only its Gigantamax version was permanent.

2 Best: Arbok

Seviper is an upgraded Ekans, but Arbok is the actual evolved version of Ekans and it’s iconic. Arbok is a cobra that has an intimidating face with sharp teeth and a crazy tongue. However, the real intimidating face is printed on the creature’s large hood.

The teardrop eyes have no pupils and are yellow and red. There is a mouth-like pattern that goes wide beneath the two eyes, almost resembling an evil grin. There are even markings above the eyes to make it look like the face is angry. Even though the rest of the snake is average, the iconic pattern puts this at the top.

1 Worst: Dunsparce

Dunsparce is considered a serpentine Pokémon and boy, is it unfortunate. This small but round creature has its eyes closed and a mouth that is super wide. Its chin has two prongs that stick out that don’t serve any other function. The creature also has two tiny wings on its back that it uses to hop around.

It also has a drill for a tail which helps it dig underground. It can move around and detect its path by the smell of the dirt, and while that is impressive, the creature itself is hard to look at.
