Andrew Yang Playing Dungeons and Dragons for Political Fundraiser

Many people are aware that Dungeons and Dragons is having a renaissance in the public eye, and it’s being increasingly played over platforms like Zoom due to the pandemic. Some people even tune in among thousands of others to watch professionals like the cast of Critical Role play. And next week, people can watch former US presidential candidate Andrew Yang roll the dice for a fundraiser.

Dungeons and Dragons isn’t a video game, but it’s proven itself to be fun for many people to play or to watch others stream. Streamed campaigns like Critical Role, Dimension 20, and The Adventure Zone often raise money for their professional players’ benefit, but even popular games like these sometimes dabble in fundraising.

Andrew Yang is most well-known for being an  entrepreneur who made his presidential campaign last year accessible to the Internet and focused partially around his idea of a UBI (universal basic income). Although he’s not running for president anymore, Yang hasn’t backed off from the political landscape and will roll up a character in the “D&D for Dems” on October 12 at 7 PM CT for Donna Imam, a Texan Democrat running for Congress.

The other party members in the fundraising campaign slash DnD campaign will include Vyasar Ganesan from the Netflix show Indian Matchmaking, and VAs Erika Ishii and Zehra Fazal. Ishii has appeared on Critical Role as well as a Vampire the Masquerade-centered tabletop stream, and Fazal voiced Halo in Young Justice: Outsiders. Although Yang is the only person in the party without acting experience, he does have plenty of public speaking and persona cultivation knowledge from his presidential bid.

The event is hosted by a few political groups like Asian American Democrats of Texas, and the people involved in the stream are all of Asian descent. Asian American representation in entertainment is an important topic in the world today, and many people are making efforts to put spotlights onto more diverse streamers and players in the world of video games particularly.

Not everyone can donate to the stream; only adult US citizens or lawful permanent residents can give money, and federal contractors can’t donate either. And this isn’t the biggest DnD-centered event happening recently; Baldur’s Gate 3 is based partially on the DnD rules and its Early Access just launched. For people who don’t like streaming and prefer just rolling around a table with friends, even in pandemic times there are remote options available for all sorts of ways to enjoy Dungeons and Dragons.
