The Art of Hades Showcases Game’s Visual Presentation | Game Rant

Besides being a popular hack and slash roguelike indie game experience in its own right, Hades is what many fans are considering a visual treat. The art style is incredibly unique, and helps to show off a very unique storyline featuring Zagreus, the son of the Greek god Hades, and his fight to leave the Underworld. A new look at the artwork of Hades reveals how much effort and style went into creating the game that many players now enjoy.

Hades spent a long time in Early Access, but now that it’s here, many fans are incredibly impressed with the writing, game mechanics, and visual presentation of Supergiant Games’ latest title. Early Access started in 2018, but the full release happened last month, and so far the critical and fan receptions have been highly positive.

The devs sent a ton of artwork to Kotaku, and they show off work from Jen Zee, Joanne Tran, and Paige Carter, who all contributed to and worked on the vis dev of Hades. The game’s visual style has been complimented by fans for being vivid and dynamic, and the compelling character designs have spawned creations like one fan’s cosplay of Zagreus.

The art is split by contributor, and Jen Zee, the Artistic Director at Supergiant Games, has some very compelling character designs and concept artwork. Fans can see images of gods like Artemis and Hades himself, as well as more monstrous creatures like Asterius the Minotaur and Cerberus the three-headed dog and guardian to the Underworld. Some of the best characters in Hades are featured in Zee’s work, but that’s not all.

Joanne Tran, the Environment Artist, also has some stunning works of the settings that helped make Hades so memorable. Places like the Hall of Hades and the tiers of lava that fill the Underworld helped make the entire world feel lived-in and real. The 3D Artist, Paige Carter, also has works featured of characters like Orpheus, Eurydice, and Charon. While these are “real” figures from Greek mythology, Carter and the other artists put their own spin on these characters to make them feel unique to Hades‘ world.

Hades stands out as one of the best roguelike games of recent years, and a large part of that is the creative direction and presentation of the world and characters. Although the story and writing of Hades also deserve a major nod, the artists working on Hades had a huge hand in making this game as memorable and enjoyable as it was to so many fans.

Hades is available now to play on PC and Nintendo Switch.
