Final Fantasy 14: The 10 Best Greatswords (& How To Obtain Them)

Greatswords are the weapon of the Dark Knight class. These tank classes are known for having a more edgy aesthetic in comparison to Gunbreaker, Paladin, and Warrior, and the greatswords in the game reflect that sentiment.

These classes have not always been a part of Final Fantasy XIV, as they were added in the Heavensward expansion and can only be learned at level 30. Due to this, they do not have has many weapon designs as long-time classes like Bard, Summoner, and White Mage. Since Shadowbringers though, Dark Knight is now considered an older class next to the newer Dancer and Gunbreaker classes. Sheer power and stats aside, Dark Knight players often have preferred weapon designs that they use as glamours. After all, players love to look unique, especially when it comes to MMORPGs.

10 The King’s Guillotine

This level 80 weapon resembles a butterfly wing, and there is no other greatsword like it. Getting it is a challenge though, as it is one of the weapons players can get when beating Titania on Extreme. Titania is one of the biggest bosses to come out of the Shadowbringers expansion and can be difficult even on normal.

Players who want this weapon better have a team of players that know what they are doing with them. Even if Titania is beaten, it could take a long time for this specific weapon to drop. Another way to get the weapon though, is to beat her ten times and trade ten totems from her fight to an NPC in Eulmore for the weapon.

9 Woeborn

With an item level of 485, this greatsword is one of the more powerful ones available to date. After all, it is a Resistance Weapon. These weapons are only unlocked after beating the Shadowbringers expansion and with each update, there are ways to make this weapon more and more powerful.

Outside of its stats, players have fallen in love with the intimidating sword design. It is massive, and its red details are quite suited for a Dark Knight’s moody aesthetic.

8 Weathered Shadowbringer

For players that love the game posters and trailers for Shadowbringers, the weapon the Warrior of Light holds in those is called the Weathered Shadowbringer. The weapon is available, and actually easy to get. You just need to hit level 80 as a Dark Knight and then you can get the sword for free from Grenoldt in The Tempest map.

In true Final Fantasy fashion, the sword is enormous. While it isn’t exactly a statement of status among players, some just like to look classic.

7 Balmung

Skipping down in level, this level 50 greatsword is actually quite popular among players. This is for those who dislike the enormous blades and prefer something a little more realistic. It has only an item level of 90, so many players have used it as a glamour for more powerful weapons as they leveled up in the game.

Balmung shows that even players who prefer slender blades can have weapons that match their tastes as a Dark Knight. The weapon can get traded for three Rowena tokens at Mor Dohna.

6 Ultimate Nothung

This level 80 weapon is highly desired by steampunk fans, as it has the unusual trait or glowing gears around its blade base.

The item is traded with an Idyllshire NPC named Bertana. Players will need to give her a Colossus Totem. The totem is a rare item, only gotten by completing The Epic of Alexander (Ultimate), which is a level 80 raid. The raid is far from easy, and players already have to beat other difficult raids to get there such as Eden’s Gate: Sepulture (Savage).

5 Tsukuyomi’s Odachi

Tsukuyomi is one of the coolest boss fights in the game, and the weapons you can get from the fight are pretty great as well. Like the boss itself, the weapons are designed in black and white with subtle moon imagery.

To get such a weapon is no easy feat though, as players have to beat  The Minstrel’s Ballad: Tsukuyomi’s Pain. Like Titania’s weapons, there is always a chance the weapon will drop but chances are not the highest. If the player beats the trial ten times though, they can trade ten Lunar totems for the weapon at Rhalgr’s Reach.

4 Hyperconductive Nothung

Not to be confused with Ultimate Nothung, Hyperconductive Nothung is a sword of a different color pallet with different particle effects. It is also level 60 instead of 80. It is one version of many weapons players get in the quest, “Finding Your Voice,” in Azys Lla. While it is not the final weapon, it has become a favorite version for many players.

Luckily, all versions can be glamoured onto the player weapon once the quest in completed.

3 Pyros Guillotine

This level 70 greatsword is loved most for its sinister but pretty pink and black particle effects. It is Eureka gear that can be traded for by NPC merchants. To get the weapon from Gerolt, players need to collect 300 Pyros Crystals and five Penthesilea’s Flame. Another option is through the Mnemeworks Station for two Smoldering Protean Crystals. Both methods need to also get a Elemental Guillotine from the player.

All of these requirements are not especially, especially considering the fact that players tend to dislike Eureka. Some players skip that whole place entirely.

2 Ultimate Dreadwyrm Claymore

Another level 70 greatsword that makes a statement is the Ultimate Dreadwyrm Claymore. There is only one way to get this weapon and it is trade-able from an NPC in Rhalgr’s Reach for one Dreadwyrm totem.

The totem is a reward for one of the most difficult and optional fights of the game, The Unending Coil of Bahamut (Ultimate). At least due to its difficulty, players only have to get one totem instead of ten.

1 Baldur Blade

This favorite blade of many is more simple in design and also one of the easier to obtain. It is possible loot for the dungeons Neverrreap and Fractal Continuum.

Players love this greatsword for its navy blue and silver colors as well as its enormity. Also, some people don’t like particle effects like many of the other greatswords have. To keep their glamours simple but still fashionable, many turn to the Baldur Blade.
