One of the most intelligent and resourceful of these mighty explorers is the human mind mage Jace Beleren. He’s famed for always having a plan, and a backup plan, regardless of the situation. Such brilliance came from overcoming many trials and unique challenges that he faced both during childhood and afterward.

10 Allied With The Gruul

The Gruul are a collection of brutal human clans residing on the plane of Ravnica. They are Red and Green aligned, exhibiting the usual aggressive and stalwart qualities of each color. Though, Jace was taken in and cared for among their ranks. This wild, yet noble, group were once the protectors of Ravnica’s nature, though urbanization and deforestation changed them to be more hateful of those who tarnish the soil. From these vengeful sentinels of the wild Jace learned a great deal on how to be efficient in battle, which greatly benefitted his Blue-based magic.

9 Vryn

Jace was born on a plane called Vryn, which is populated by many people who inhabit giant circular structures known as mage-rings. These places are conduits for mana that channel energy straight from the plane’s leylines. They are controlled by a group of ring mages who store and manipulate this energy for the benefit of these circular cities. Those who inhabit them are known as “ringers”.

8 Jace Was Once The Student Of A Sphinx

One of Jace’s strongest traits, his telepathy, manifested very early in his life, to the displeasure of his parents. They sought the advice of a reputable mage for how to deal with their son’s unique talents. Alhammarret the sphinx was who aided them by offering to take young Jace as his apprentice and guide him. Through his teachings, Jace learned many new spells and developed useful talents very quickly. Though, the good times did not last.

7 Alhammarret’s Betrayal

It was later revealed that Alhammarret was deceiving two local warring factions for profit. He was using Jace to gather intelligence from each group and then sold the intel to the other. Following each mission, Alhammarret wiped Jace’s mind, though the young human soon discovered what was happening.

With this new knowledge, Jace challenged his master to a destructive duel that left them both worse off. The apprentice crushed the mind of his master, rendering the sphinx unable to breathe. Before long, he was dead, though Jace had taken substantial damage from the conflict as well and he subconsciously planeswalked into Ravnica, where he was found and cared for by the Gruul until he recovered.

6 Blackmail In Ravnica

After recovering, Jace made his way in Ravnica by blackmailing members of high society. His telepathy and mind magic allowed him to collect secrets as if they were coins, which he often turned them into. Being able to extort the wealthiest people on the plane gave Jace access to great income and a comfortable life. For a while. It was not long before his masterful manipulation drew the interest of a group seeking to acquire his talents.

5 Infinite Consortium

Jace became the target of multiple creature attacks, all of which were summoned by a group known as the Infinite Consortium. At first, he thought that these were assassination attempts resulting from his trade rubbing people the wrong way. It turned out that these were actually tests for him to see if he was worthy of joining the Consortium. Soon, Jace met the group’s leader, a man with a metal arm named Tezzeret. The two then trained together, which allowed Jace to hone his already mighty mind even further, though for the benefit of the Infinite Consortium.

4 Jace Vs. Chandra

During one point of his employment with the Infinite Consortium, he was tasked with retrieving a stolen dragon scroll and erasing the memory of the thief. This thief was Chandra Nalaar, who he tracked to the plane of Regatha.

There the two Planeswalkers had a mighty duel, though Jace emerged as the victor. Though, three years later they would reunite under very different circumstances as allies.

3 Battling The Eldrazi

Jace did not know that Chandra had transcribed the text of the dragon scroll before he had retrieved it, so even though he wiped her mind, she was able to relearn what was within the ancient artifact. Jace, curious about the scroll’s contents as well, read it for himself and learned of curiosities to be found on the plane of Zendikar. While traveling the plane out of interest, he came across Chandra fighting another Planeswalker in the shape of a dragon. Together, Jace and Chandra defeated the imitation dragon, though in the process had accidentally unlocked an ancient prison holding colossal beings known as the Eldrazi Titans at bay. They, and a few others, were able to work together to kill two of the titans, though the third escaped to another plane.

2 Forming The Gatewatch

To defeat the Eldrazi Titans, Jace teamed up with Chandra Nalaar, Nissa Revane, Gideon Jura, and the inhabitants of Zendikar. The Planeswalkers that united for this cause swore an oath that they would hereby act together against this, and future, threats to the Multiverse. Although it was Nissa who snared the titans in Zendikar’s leylines and Chandra who dealt the killing blow to the two captured Eldrazi, Jace was the one who formed the plan and organized the group, making him their unofficial leader.

1 Hunting The Last Eldrazi Titan

After the Gatewatch has successfully dispatched the two Eldrazi Titans in Zendikar, they formed a headquarters on Ravnica and proceeded to work together to defend the Multiverse. However, it was not long before signs of Emrakul, the remaining Eldrazi Titan, appeared on the plane of Innistrad. Jace, aided by Nissa Revane and a Soratami Planeswalker named Tamiyo, trapped Emrakul in Innistrad’s moon before sealing it there. Finally, the last of the Eldrazi threat was dealt with, for which much of the Multiverse was thankful.
