Bloodborne: 10 Things You Never Knew You Could Do In The Chalice Dungeons

The Chalice Dungeons of Bloodborne are home to mysteries hidden by the developers. Inside, players can find extra materials, exclusive enemies, and even content that didn’t make it into the base game. FromSoftware is known for their tendency to include secrets in their games as part of the lore, but the Chalice Dungeons take it a step further than normal.

Every dungeon is generated uniquely for each player, meaning no two players will have the same experience while exploring. Since the dungeons are expansive and plentiful, anyone could lose themselves within, both literally and figuratively.

10 Finding Illusory Walls

A staple of any modern FromSoftware game, illusory walls seemed to be absent from Bloodborne until players found them in the Chalice Dungeons. The walls vary in importance, most of them leading to loot and materials, but some are actually imperative to the progress in the dungeons.

Looking for them becomes easy after a bit of practice since they look out of place. The best way to describe them is that they appear on long, barren walls that look like the door was removed from them. Sometimes it’s best to just hit a wall until you find one.

9 Equipment Galore

Bloodborne separates itself from other games in the soulsborne category because of its few sets of armor and weapons. The weapons are more unique than those found in Dark Souls, and armor sets have little use outside of fashion.

In the chalice dungeons, players can find other sets of armor including the Bone Ash set and the Madman’s set which are aesthetically different from other sets found in the regular world. On top of the armor sets, players can find the Beast Claw weapons in the Chalice Dungeons as well. There’re many other weapons to be found in the dungeons, but they are just slightly different versions of regular weapons found in the world. The main difference is they have different blood gem slots to help with unique builds.

8 Farming Blood Rocks

In order to upgrade a weapon to +10, players will need blood rocks, an extremely rare material. There is only one blood rock in the main story mode, and another in the DLC. They are also available in the insight shop after defeating Mergo’s Wet Nurse.

The last spot to find them is within the Chalice Dungeons. Certain enemies like Lower Loran, Isz Gravestone, and Pthumerian Ihyll have a low chance of dropping them and the rocks can be found in chests. Chalice Dungeons are great for farming materials like Blood Rocks since the possibilities of what can be found there are not as restricted like the story mode.

7 PVP Battles

An early use for the procedurally generated dungeons was to set up pvp fights in a controlled environment. Chalice Dungeons can be preserved if players use a certain code called a glyph, that corresponds with each specific set up of a dungeon. This also means that they can share that code with a friend to have them join their dungeon, or play it on their own.

Players quickly started to use this feature as a means to fight each other in perfectly set up arenas. Eventually, people stopped doing this and just used levels from the story because the Chalice Dungeon arenas were often inconvenient and took too long to put together.

6 Cut Content

Chalice glyphs can be used to access specific dungeons and areas. That long list of dungeons includes areas that contain cut content from the game. Secret bosses, scrapped armor sets, and even unused model prototypes are all tucked away in the dungeons.

It almost seems like FromSoftware just couldn’t bring themselves to completely throw their creations away so they hid them for fans to find. Soulsborne fans love to theorize so this obviously drove them nuts with curiosity. It took over 3 years for fans to find every secret in the dungeons, and even now, they’re not sure they’ve seen it all.

5 Safari Tours

In the Chalice Dungeons, specific enemies usually spawn only in certain dungeons, on certain floors. Players were confident they knew where every enemy could be until 3 years after the game’s release.

After a discovery of skeletal dogs in a certain dungeon, players realized that sometimes the dungeons can be more random than expected. With this, it can be a fun experience to explore the dungeons and look out for rare enemy placements that have literally never been documented before.

4 Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen

The Chalice Dungeons canonically exist under the city of Yharnam, and that’s why they seem to hold so many answers to the questions about what’s plaguing the city above. Within the dungeons exists Yharnam, the Pthumerian Queen. Her name alone shows how significant she is to the story of the city she lives under. She is a secret boss only found by completing 7 other dungeons and performing her blood ritual.

The path to her is long and difficult but the fight is one of the most interesting in the game. Her move set is unique full of fresh mechanics not found in the story mode. She can also prove very difficult to beat if the player doesn’t prepare well.

3 Run A Fight Club

It’s extremely common to run a pvp fight club in Bloodborne multiplayer where players fight each other in orderly, tournament fashion. What’s uncommon, is finding enemies who will take their focus off attacking the player, and turn on each other instead. Thanks to the Chalice Dungeon’s unique generations, it’s possible to get enemies to fight each other.

There’re certain enemies who become aggravated against all units in their range, not just the player character. When those enemies spawn around a boss or mini-boss, they may attack them. It’s refreshing to watch enemies infight for a change.

2 Increase The Difficulty

While there is no literal easy, normal, or hard modes to soulsborne games, there are ways to up the ante, and make things harder for the player. Most of these are player-imposed challenges but not in the Defiled Chalice Dungeons.

In the defiled dungeons, players have to play with halved life bars, and deal with increased elemental damage. Luckily, base damage is lessened, but that doesn’t do too much for the overall difficulty. Nobody has an easy time against these tough fights but these dungeons house some of the best treasure so the challenge is worth it.

1 Break The Game

Because of the plethora of materials, equipment, experience, and general proximity of it all to one another, players have essentially skipped the game by using the chalice dungeons. Everything the character could need to obtain a high level and fully upgraded equipment is down there.

Players can use reverse depth chalices early on in the game to buy a chalice that produces the best loot. After farming for a while, players will be able to max out their weapons and use the experience gathered to level up as they choose.
