Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood Release Date, Special Editions, and More

Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood is an upcoming action-RPG based on White Wolf Publishing’s tabletop RPG of the same name. Players familiar with the cult classic Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines should be excited as Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood takes place in the same setting, The World of Darkness. This setting features supernatural beings that struggle for power, but this time, players will take on the role of Cahal, a shapeshifting werewolf banished from his tribe.

With a release date set for February 4, 2021, and everything shown so far, Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood looks to be an interesting game. With two new Vampire: The Masquerade games set to be released in 2021, Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood offers a look into how The World of Darkness will appear on the new generation of consoles, not just for itself but the setting as well potentially.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood focuses on the story of Cahal, a werewolf exiled from his tribe after accidentally killing a fellow member. In the game, werewolves are called Garou and form a nation of thirteen tribes. While other supernatural beings like vampires integrate themselves into human society, werewolves are solitary and instead work to protect Mother Nature. Mother Earth, referred to as Gaia in Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood, has been ravaged by mankind’s greed for centuries and is struggling against Wyrm, a cosmic force of destruction. While the Garou are tasked to protect Gaia, the tribes all have different opinions on how to reach this goal, and as a result, there’s constant in-fighting.

Furthermore, the plot includes Cahal searching for his missing daughter just to discover that his old tribe is in danger and he must come to their aid. Soon, Cahal finds himself in the midst of a battle against the Pentex corporation, servants of the Wyrm who cause pollution and environmental damage.

The premise of Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood is extremely interesting given the nature of its story themes. While the main focus is on the Pentex corporation irreversibly damaging the ecosystem for profit, several Garou tribes fight for their own causes such as women’s rights, social class disparity, and technological advancement. Given the nature of clashing ideals between the tribes, it should be interesting to see how they come together in order to fight Pentex and the Wyrm.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood features a number of gameplay mechanics that reflect the story and characters involved. For example, Cahal has the ability to shapeshift into a wolf, human, or werewolf form. Each form includes different game mechanics: the wolf form is mostly used for exploration and tracking, the human form is used for interactions and conversations, and the werewolf form is used for combat. Along with stealth and reconnaissance mechanics, Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood also features a skill tree allowing players to test different builds as well as a power-up system that can be used during combat.

A key mechanic to Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood is rage management. As Cahal discovers the pollution and greed caused by humans, his rage rises. If the player allows the rage to build up and overflow, Cahal will be consumed and enter a frenzied state where he is much more powerful but cannot tell whether a person is an enemy or a bystander. The only way for the player to break out of the frenzied state is to kill everyone present, even if they are innocent. As a result, players will have to carefully manage their rage and ensure that its use is justified.

This ethical dilemma is an interesting approach for Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood. The developer, Cyanide Studio, wanted to create a narrative where players were faced with the decision of using violence in order to change the world. Players must decide what their limits are and manage their rage effectively in order to advance the story. Hopefully, this will create a narrative for players where the decisions they make have an effect on future plotlines and character development. It seems that Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood will encourage players to reflect on their choices and come to their own conclusions rather than depending on the narrative to tell them.

While some fans were a little critical of the physics and movement in the trailers, the overall reception for Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood has been positive. Of course, one reason why players are excited is because of Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood’s release on the new generation of consoles: the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

If Cyanide Studio is able to combine the thought-provoking storyline with the unique combat system effectively, Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood could turn out to be a hidden gem for the new generation of games. Moreover, Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood will serve as a fantastic introduction to the World of Darkness for players who have never played the original tabletop RPG before. With both Vampire: The Masquerade 2 and Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong set to be released in 2021, Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood will give newcomers to the series an opportunity to explore this supernatural world in detail and maybe open them up to checking out another facet of the setting down the road.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood will release on February 4, 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
