Now that Hu Tao has finally been released in Genshin Impact after months of teasing and rumors, she’s shaping up to be a top-tier fighter. With the right build, she can be one of the most valuable five-star Pyro characters in Genshin Impact.
Much of Hu Tao’s kit revolves around her health, which may tie back to her roots as a funeral director. For example, the damage that Hu Tao’s Elemental Skill deals increases with her Max HP and changes her normal Attack DMG to Pyro DMG. Additionally, when releasing her Elemental Burst, if her HP is below 50%, her damage output and health regeneration are both increased. And when her health is less than 50%, one of her passive talents increases her Pyro DMG by 33%. Constellations exhibit similar qualities; C2 increases Blood Blossom DMG by 10% of her Max HP. And at C6, if she falls below 25% health, her CRIT Rate is increased by 100%.
Hu Tao operates best in a Genshin Impact party as a Pyro Main DPS, meaning she’ll be the main damage dealer of the team and her equipped items will support her Pyro abilities. There are many ways to build Hu Tao dependent on the player’s party and preferences, such as teaming her up with shield characters like Zhongli and equipping her with the Retracing Bolide Artifact set.
As far as weapons go, the new weapon Staff of Homa is easily the best weapon for Hu Tao, as if it was created for her. While its skills aren’t geared towards Pyro abilities, Staff of Homa is also known as the “firewood staff” used to banish demons in rituals, which lines up with Hu Tao’s own lore.
Its skill, Reckless Cinnabar, increases HP starting at 20% and scaling with refinement, and provides an ATK bonus, also scaling with refinement. Additionally, when the wielder’s health drops below 50%, they are granted an ATK bonus based on their Max HP.
For Artifacts, the 4-piece Crimson Witch of Flames set works excellently on Hu Tao because her Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst utilizes Pyro DMG, and the 2-piece set offers a Pyro DMG Bonus of 15%. But players might want to forgo the effects of the 4-piece set and instead focus on getting better damage out of her normal attack. If this is the case, as with most DPS characters in Genshin Impact, equip a 2-piece set of Gladiator’s Finale to supplement.
For sub-stats, because Hu Tao’s kit focuses heavily on Max HP, try to farm for pieces with bonuses to HP and ATK in Genshin Impact over anything else.
