Mario Fan Makes Elaborate Themed Rollercoaster in Planet Coaster

Super Mario fan has created a Mario-themed roller coaster using Planet Coaster. The virtual ride is extremely ambitious, taking riders through a variety of classic Mario set pieces.

As its name implies, Planet Coaster is a simulation game based around theme park management. Players can build and manage virtual parks using pre-existing rides, or build their own. While fans have been impressed by the Super Nintendo World themed land currently open at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, that attraction does not include any traditional roller coasters. It’s no shocker, then, that fans would be eager to imagine how a coaster might look with Mario theming.

YouTube user TommyT 067 focused on the classic Super Nintendo game Super Mario World when designing the roller coaster. Riders assume a first-person perspective as Mario, complete with jumps, collecting coins, avoiding enemies, and hitting gates that serve as checkpoints. What is most impressive is the coaster’s length; riders travel around Yoshi’s Island and visit a Ghost House before confronting Bowser and returning to a triumphant look at Peach’s Castle. While not interactive like Super Nintendo World’s “final boss” attraction, it is an immersive glimpse into Mario’s life.

The coaster is not officially sanctioned, but it falls in line with Nintendo’s recent efforts to promote the creativity of the Mario franchise. Between the wildly successful launch of the LEGO Super Mario line and Nintendo’s continued support for the Super Mario Maker sub-franchise, it’s clear people will be designing new Mario-themed structures for a long time.

Everything in and around the coaster was created using Planet Coaster, which is a testament to just how robust the game’s ride building can be. TommyT 067 has put out a large number of videos for various franchises using the game, such as a Sonic the Hedgehog coaster set in the series’ iconic Green Hill Zone. Plus, because players can upload and share assets through the game’s Frontier Workshop system, anyone with the game can take elements from custom coasters and make their own.

Although Planet Coaster is a few years old, it’s no surprise that it is still going strong, as it gained a new lease of life in late 2020 with the release of Planet Coaster: Console Edition. This gave PlayStation and Xbox owners the chance to build and manage their own theme parks, with substantially modified controls as compared to the original version. Critics were impressed with the console port, ranking it as one of the best next-generation console games of 2020.

Planet Coaster is now available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
