One Far Cry Staple is All But Guaranteed to Be in Far Cry 6

The Far Cry games are all about causing chaos in an open sandbox while fighting larger-than-life villains. The franchise has evolved quite a lot now, having put out numerous entries in the mainline series, as well as spin-offs. Many of the games’ mechanics have remained constant for long periods of time, but this could very well change with the upcoming Far Cry 6.

While the game’s delay may have set back the game’s momentum, there’s no denying that fans are desperately waiting to see how things turn out with the new game. It’s definitely great to see developers experimenting with new possibilities in the same space, but some things do remain the same. It might not hold true for every franchise, but there are some mainstay features that will definitely have a place in Far Cry 6.

The Far Cry games are known for including a very peculiar early ending for its mainline games for quite some time now. Far Cry 4 and Far Cry 5 both featured early endings, but those easter eggs haven’t translated over to the spin-off entries. Far Cry 4 starts off with a very early encounter with the antagonist Pagan Min. After a brief cutscene, Min instructs the player to stay where they are and that he’d return pretty quickly. Waiting for 15 minutes triggers the alternate ending cutscene which sees Ajay performing his mother’s last rites and peacefully returning to his native land.

In a similar fashion, Far Cry 5 starts off with the player on a mission to arrest cult leader Joseph Seed. It’s a straightforward task, one that requires walking into the church and handcuffing him with a button prompt. Players who refuse to press the button for some time will trigger the early ending which sees the team return back to their duties as usual, which puts a premature ending to the whole ordeal.

If trends are anything to go by, Far Cry 6 may include such an early ending as well. It’s true that Far Cry 6 may be a game of many firsts, which does open the door for much speculation, even for an easter egg ending. That being said, this feature has become a far too iconic staple of the series that forgoing it would be a missed opportunity. While it remains to be seen what such an ending might entail, it’s easy to imagine how Far Cry 6 could introduce such an easter egg ending.

It’s known that Far Cry 6 shifts the narrative tone from survival to resistance from the outset, and that the game’s setting Yara is under a great threat from Anton’s dictatorship. In addition to this, it’s also known that the resisting force needs someone to unify their efforts and take down the tyranny, which is presumably where the protagonist Dani Rojas comes into play.

This could set up the perfect scenario wherein the early game sees Dani receiving an offer to lead the resistance. Theoretically, the player could be given a similar cue to accept or reject such an offer. Should the player accept such a deal, the narrative can move forward, and denying the offer could lead to a premature end with credits.

While the early endings may be an iconic part of the series, there’s quite a number of other things that have a fairly decent chance of being in the game. The first in the bunch seems to be the outposts, which can fit comfortably in a setting like Yara, despite the seemingly radical tonal shift. Outposts have been an iconic part of the series and remain a fun activity nevertheless as it’s an open playground for taking out a bunch of enemies in any way players deem fit.

In addition to this, player choice is another thing that ties into early endings and could be something that remains constant for the games. Triggering early endings requires players to make some not-so-obvious choices, and would most probably work in a similar fashion in Far Cry 6. This extends to featuring multiple endings as well, where players get the choice to deal the antagonist, or in this case antagonists, a fate which they consider to be righteous. Adding an element of choice to early endings would be an interesting evolution on that feature.

That being said, Far Cry 6 might need to make choices an integral part of the gameplay experience in quite a few ways to innovate the formula. In addition to featuring standard ending choices, players should have a say in how the resistance decides to go about things. That could theoretically have a visible impact on the world and the associated characters at large, making every playthrough different.

Far Cry 6 has a lot of potential and could prove to be a stepping stone towards dictating the tone for a new decade of Far Cry games. Hopefully, the developers capitalize on the Far Cry 6‘s momentum and make a game that can stand head-to-head alongside the best games in the series.

Far Cry 6 is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
