Valheim Reaches Two Months as Steam’s Top-Selling Game

Steam’s weekly list of the top-selling games for the week leading up to March 28, as measured by revenue, marks an impressive milestone. This week’s chart marks Valheim‘s second consecutive month in the number-one position. For eight weeks straight, Valheim has dominated the competition. This week’s list has other surprises, too, including two new games and some older releases seeing a resurgence.

It’s not unprecedented for a popular game to top Steam’s chart for weeks or even months. However, that Valheim is an independently developed game with little buzz prior to its release is something special. That Valheim is also only in Early Access, has yet to issue a major content update yet, and still has managed over 180 thousand reviews with an overwhelmingly positive average – that might be unprecedented. At this point, it’s a matter of seeing how long Valheim‘s streak can go.

This week’s steam list has another impressive change beyond Valheim. For the first time since Steam implemented its “Adults-Only” category, a game marked as adults-only has reached second rank on the list. That game is Subverse, which mixes SHMUP gameplay and tactical turn-based RPG action, with adult content shared between missions. Subverse isn’t the first adult-only game to make the list, that was HuniePop 2, but it is the highest-ranked adult-only game so far.

The other new game release on this week’s list is It Takes Two from the developer of A Way Out. It Takes Two reached seventh on this week’s list. While it was featured at multiple different shows over the past year, the two-player requirement makes it somewhat niche.

While not new games, there are some resurgent releases that are back on the list after some time away. Half-Life: Alyx climbed all the way up to fourth on the list due to being Steam’s mid-week sale, discounted by 40 percent through the end of the month. Both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 are on the list as well, in ninth and tenth position, due to an ongoing CD Project Red sale.

The remaining spots on the list go to the Valve Index VR Kit in third, Outriders in fifth – having climbed up from ninth last week, Grand Theft Auto 5 in sixth, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – Operation Broken Fang in eighth. Looking toward next week, there are several games that could make the list including Neptunia Virtual Stars, a cheery anime hack n’ slash; Narita Boy, a retro 2D action-adventure game; and Evil Genius 2, the long-awaited RTS sequel. Whether these titles can usurp Valheim is another matter entirely.
