Teppen Developers Talk Capcom Crossovers, Fan Feedback

Developer Capcom has a long history of crossovers. Monster Hunter games often feature DLC with series like Resident Evil, and Marvel vs. Capcom is one of the most famous fighting game franchises ever. The company also lends characters to other devs, with Street Fighter’s Ryu appearing in Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. and Epic Games’ Fortnite. Collectible card game Teppen could be considered a celebration of all Capcom history.

This mobile title released in July 2019, based on a conversation between executive producers from developer GungHo Online Entertainment and Capcom, according to directors Yuki Okano and Satoshi Ogihara. GungHo is in-part known for its mobile game Puzzle & Dragons, which has crossed with Monster Hunter, Devil May Cry, and Street Fighter, as well as numerous franchises. Game Rant spoke to Okano and Ogihara about working with Capcom’s icons to create Teppen‘s universe. They will collectively be referred to as GungHo for this article.

“[Teppen] started as a collaborative idea, rather than one [developer] approaching the other.”

Teppen is an action card game using pre-existing universes similar to Hearthstone using World of Warcraft, but GungHo said Teppen‘s battle design fuses real-time and turn-based action with “no strong reference” to any existing game. It should also appeal to fans of Capcom’s various franchises similar to mobile games like Pokemon Masters or Fire Emblem Heroes, which bring different canons together to tell new stories.

Eight “Heroes,” playable characters with unlockable skills that add strategic benefits to a player’s deck, were on Teppen‘s starting roster. Eight more have been released as of this writing, with Resident Evil‘s Ada Wong coming in the “A Dark Agenda” update this month. Previous Heroes include Okami‘s AmaterasuMega Man‘s X, Darkstalkers‘ Morrigan Aensland, and Monster Hunter’s Nergigante, each representing a virtue and one of four elements: Red, Green, Purple, and Black.

“Our goal was to create a world where various characters can exist on one stage,” GungHo said. “But we didn’t simply mix them in.” Each Hero has a scenario to corroborate why they are going to Teppen‘s setting, the Land of Illusion. However, GungHo said the team considers gameplay first, creating skills that reflect each character’s “unique disposition.”

On top of that GungHo said it tries to arrange characters to match Teppen‘s world before being added. For example, “A Dark Agenda” featured Capcom’s Strider franchise, including series lead Strider Hiryu, for the first time along with Wong. This connection was considered “vital,” as the two have commonalities “working behind the scenes, and interactions between the two characters will greatly advance the story.”

Strider characters coming to the game was marketed as a “highly requested” addition in the March 1, 2021 update post for “A Dark Agenda.” The developer said it takes all players’ requests into consideration given they have been “great references when developing future content.” According to Gungho,

“However, we have a direction we want the story to go and will consider characters that best suit that. So we might not be able to include everything fans want.”

GungHo said some franchises and characters whom fans have requested might appear in the future, so it could not comment on upcoming additions. With all 16 Heroes gathered, Teppen will begin shifting gears to tell a story about what they find in the Land of Illusions; mixing different perspectives rather than establishing motives. The gameplay being prepared “can excite all users,” so GungHo said fans should stay tuned for its next announcement.

Teppen‘s English Twitter account hosted a giveaway between March 3 and 12 for the chance to win copies of Resident Evil Village, though GungHo did not comment on whether similar deals would be made for games like Monster Hunter Rise. It also did not comment on whether GungHo’s multiplayer Switch title Ninjala would see any kind of Capcom crossovers, given Ninjala has teamed up with Sonic the Hedgehog. But there are plans for what Teppen‘s story is leading up to, which will be unveiled with future expansions.

Teppen is available for Android and iOS mobile devices.
