April 30 Is A Big Day for Switch and PS5 Gamers | Game Rant

One of the best things about a new year for the gaming community is filling in the new calendar with game release dates. It’s always nice to know when there’s a new game on the way, but it’s even better to know exactly when it’s coming out so fans can count down the days. Sometimes, the stars align, and one particular day becomes a major day for completely different communities. In 2021, April 30th is one of those days. Nintendo will finally be releasing New Pokemon Snap on that day, returning to a storied Pokemon spinoff. At the same time, the PS5 will be getting a highly anticipated exclusive, namely Returnal.

It’s sort of funny that these are the games that April 30 is supporting, because they couldn’t possibly be more different from each other. One is a delightful photographic romp through the colorful world of Pokemon, and the other is a twisted and increasingly horrifying sci-fi shooter on an alien planet. Still, New Pokemon Snap and Returnal come together to make April 30 a blockbuster of a day for the game industry. Each game has its own impassioned audience, and since they’re different console exclusives in very different genres, they won’t hardly be competing with one another. April 30 looks like a day worth waiting for for a lot of fans.

When the console wars of 2020 were still raging, some fans argued that the PS5 had the upper hand because Sony had more notable exclusive games than Microsoft and the Xbox Series X. It can’t be denied that the PS5 has a solid list of games, including Spider-Man: Miles Morales and the upcoming God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon: Forbidden West, among many others. The PS5 is already well stocked, but that doesn’t mean it won’t take more good games. The hope for many sci-fi lovers is that Returnal will be another gem in the PS5’s crown, and it’ll offer an action-packed horror experience that stands out from other PS5 games.

Returnal is certainly a pretty unique title. Although it belongs to an ongoing fad of games about time loops, it’s also strikingly unique in its delivery of the genre through Selene’s journey into an unimaginably dark corner of space. It’s clear that there’s some twisted things going on on Returnal‘s Atrophos. It seems to be offering first-person horror sequences as elements of Selene’s past appear on Atrophos, which sounds like a chilling twist to add to this shooter. There’s only a few more weeks to go before fans will get to see how Selene’s story unfolds for themselves.

Unlike Returnal, New Pokemon Snap is far from a new game concept. About twenty years ago, Nintendo came out with the first Pokemon Snap for the Nintendo 64. The premise is simple: a professor asks the player to travel along a set path, observe Pokemon in the wild, interact with them, and take pictures of all their activity. It’s completely separate from the turn-based combat that Pokemon is famous for, but even so, Pokemon Snap was a huge hit. Fans have been asking for a remake for many years, and at last, Nintendo is delivering.

2021 is the perfect year for Pokemon Snap to make a comeback. This year is the franchise’s 25th anniversary, so Nintendo can celebrate with nostalgic spinoffs like New Pokemon Snap as well as brand new ideas like Pokemon Legends: Arceus. The Switch seems uniquely appropriate for a Pokemon Snap remake, too, since it can be held just like a camera when it isn’t docked. Fans are hopeful that Nintendo have managed to channel all the best parts of the old Pokemon Snap and then some. Luckily, it won’t be much longer now before longtime Pokemon fans can relive this spinoff. April 30 is the day that they’ll finally get the remake they’ve been waiting for.
