Don’t buy the new iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard — buy this combo instead

29 4 月, 2020 Jeramy Johnson 0

The iPad Pro is not the only way to go.

Earlier this spring, Apple unveiled a refresh to its iPad Pro lineup, with improved cameras and sensors, and that device was great; in fact, it was everything we expected and more. But the real headliner of Apple’s recent spring announcements was the new and improved Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro, which sports features like a floating hinge stand, backlit keys, and a trackpad. Yet, as impressive as these updates are, I wouldn’t recommend that most people spend their hard-earned money on them.

Yes, I think that the iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard are great products, and yes, I know that some of us at Android Central have even recommended that our readers go for iPads over Android tablets or even Chromebooks in the past. Still, in this case, I feel differently. You see, the iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard offer more firepower than most people really need and more than they should probably spend on. They’re like trying to kill a fly with a bazooka.

29 4 月, 2020 Stephen Warwick 0

“Engineers have met several core challenges for the app to meet public health needs…”

What you need to know

The UK’s National Health Service is lining up to debut its contact tracing app.
Efforts have been met with skepticism over its decision not to follow Apple and Google’s decentralized model.
Despite this, NHSX says that its engineers have met the challenges that this could cause.

The NHS has said that its UK contact tracing app will be functional and practical, despite the fact it has chosen not to go with Apple and Google’s decentralized model of contact tracing.

As reported by ZDNet:

With traditional public health contact-tracing methods unable to keep up with the pace of the pandemic, the UK government has been working on a tool to digitally track and warn people who have been around someone who is showing symptoms of the coronavirus.

But the health service’s innovation agency NHSX has now confirmed that it will not be following the approach jointly put forwa…

Make your Chromebook feel like home with a new wallpaper

29 4 月, 2020 Ara Wagoner 0

When using a Chromebook, you may notice that your desktop isn’t used in quite the same way as it is on a Windows or MacOS laptop. While other systems let you use the desktop as a dumping ground for all your documents and application shortcuts, Chrome’s desktop is clean, clear, and used for only one thing: your wallpaper. As such, your wallpaper is more important than ever, and here’s how to set one you actually like on your Chromebook.

How to change a Chromebook’s wallpaper from the Wallpaper Picker

Google’s got quite a few great wallpaper collections going, and you can access them on any Chromebook with ease:

Right-click (or long-press on a touchscreen Chromebook or tablet) on your desktop.

Select Set wallpaper.

Select a category from the left side menu of the Wallpaper Picker.
Tap your desired wallpaper to set it.

To set a topic wallpaper that changes daily, select Daily Refresh, the first item in most sections of the Wallpaper Picker.
Select either the Center Cropped or …

Here’s which purchases count as travel with the Chase Sapphire cards

29 4 月, 2020 ThePointsGuy 0

Heads up! We share savvy shopping and personal finance tips to put extra cash in your wallet. Android Central may receive a commission from The Points Guy Affiliate Network. Please note that the offers mentioned below are subject to change at any time and some may no longer be available.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve has received plenty of attention since its debut back in 2016 – that’s in no small part due to the 3x points it earns on travel and dining purchases worldwide. Although it earns 2x on these same purchases, the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card remains a top pick, especially for those new to the award travel game. The great thing about this is that Chase has a very generous definition of what counts as travel.

How Chase Defines Travel

We’ve established that earning 2x and 3x points on travel and dining, respectively, with the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Reserve is pretty impressive. But how do you know if a given purchase qualifies? While the dining half of the equation is…

Amazon’s Echo Spot is down to its best price yet for one day only

29 4 月, 2020 Adam Oram 0

Amazon’s Echo hardware continues to be ever-popular with smart home fanatics and Alexa-enabled devices are now available in all shapes and sizes. One of Amazon’s most unique Echo devices is the Amazon Echo Spot. The diminutive smart screen is perfect for a nightstand or desk with its 2.5-inch circular display and, today only, you can score one brand new for only $69.99 in black or white via Woot. That’s around half off its regular price at Amazon (though it is discounted to $90 there right now).

The smart alarm clock-type device was released back in 2017, though the original Spot never got replaced by a newer model with most of Amazon’s smart screen attention going to the Echo Show lineup. In fact, the Spot has been unavailable for some time so deals like today’s are extremely rare. It’s likely this Woot deal will sell out before the end of the day, so don’t wait on it if you want one.

Echo devices with displays allow you to interact with people at your front door from your Ring Vi…

The Pixel 4a will start shipping in late May according to a new report

29 4 月, 2020 Michael Allison 0

The Pixel 4a was always thought to launch in May, this just puts a date to it.

What you need to know

Google is probably launching the Pixel 4a in the middle of May.
Internal carrier documents put the shipping date for the company’s first mid-range phone on May 22.
The Pixel 4a was previously expected to launch at the now-canceled Google I/O developer’s conference.

Google’s Pixel 4a is said to be available on Vodafone Germany from May 22, according to Caschys (via Android Police) which looked at internal carrier documents.

Reasoning backward, it’s possible Google could announce the Pixel 4a around a week before launch as it has done in the past, placing it right at the time where it would have been hosting I/O. Alternatively, it could announce them like the Pixel Buds, with sales beginning at or shortly after an announcement post.

Google’s Pixel 4 and 4 XL are expensive phones with obvious cons for regular users (poor battery life) and not-so-obvious benefits (soli). The Pixel…

Predator: Hunting Grounds is a bad game and not worth your money

29 4 月, 2020 Jennifer Locke 0

Saying I’ve played worse games isn’t exactly a compliment, even if it’s true.

The Alien series already had a video game entry to tarnish its name, so it was only a matter of time before Predator got one. I don’t think Predator’s will go down quite as badly (there were a lot of other factors that led to Colonial Marines’ controversy), but at the very least, the game will fade into obscurity. There’s nothing memorable about it.

Developer IllFonic had a lot to learn from its other asymmetrical multiplayer title, Friday the 13th: The Game, which was met with mediocre reception, and it appears that the studio couldn’t quite capitalize on that knowledge. Predator: Hunting Grounds is a mess. There’s fleeting enjoyment to be had if you can team up with your friends, but it remains unbalanced, unpolished, and lacks the soul worthy of the franchise name.

That’s not to say Predator needs to, or even intends to be taken seriously. Its movie entries range from campy and cheesy to downright bad…

How to record the screen on your OnePlus phone

29 4 月, 2020 Harish Jonnalagadda 0

OnePlus added native screen recording to OxygenOS in 2019, so if you’re using a phone that has OxygenOS 9.5 and above, you can use the feature. You get a lot of customization options with the screen recorder, and the ability to record audio as well. Here’s how to enable the feature on your OnePlus phone, and how to maximize its potential.

How to add Screen Recorder as a shortcut

The screen recorder option is available as a shortcut in the settings tray on the notification pane. It isn’t listed in the default pane, so you’ll have to add the tile from the settings customization window. Here’s how to do it:

Pull down on the status bar to reveal the notification drawer.
Pull down once again to reveal all the settings.
Select the Pencil icon at the bottom of the notification drawer to add more tiles.

Hold and drag the Screen Recorder tile from the bottom to the notification drawer.
Choose the position for the tile in the tray.
Hit the Back button to finish editing. You’ll now se…
